IMPROVEMENT IN BURGLAR-ALARMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 68,777, dated October 11, 1875 application filed September 9, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, J osEPH PENNEPACKER, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new andusefulImprovements in Portable Burglar-Alarms; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and useit, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which Figures 1 and 2 are perspectives. Fig. 3 is a front elevation. with face plate removed, showing striking mechanism. Fig. 4 is a vertical section; and Fig. 5, a side elevation, part of the gong being broken away.

My invention consists in the peculiar construction and combination of parts, as hereinson going out of a room, so that when the door is opened thereafter the devices will operate for thepurpose intended.

Fourth, to the construction and combination of devices whereby the alarm is available for the protection of the adjacentdoor and of one or more windows at the same time.

Referring to the accompanying drawing, A shows a face-plate, to which is affixed any suitable mechanism for operating a striker, Ct, by

which an alarm is sounded on a gong, B, said mechanism being wound up by a button, b, and allowed to operate when a'pin, 0, attached to a hinged tripper, O, is drawn out of engagement with an escapement, a. D represents a clamp, formed in sections (1 d, so as to be adjustable, and constructed generally as described in Letters Patent issued to me, dated September 30, 187 3, No. 143,37 9 The screw by which the sections of this clamp are held together is shown at d, and enters a female screw, 6, formed in the gong B, or in a cap, E, which forms part of the striking mechanism. In this latter case, as illustrated in the drawing, the striking mechanism is first screwed into the gong, and the male screw 01 then inserted in the female screw 0, the gong thus serving as a nut for the screw, on which it is supported, and which fastens the sections of the adjustable clamp together. To the tripper 0, which is hinged at 0 is fastened a spring'catch, F, which will permit the door to close without sounding an alarm. When the door is opened, however, it meets the shoulder f, forcing back the hinged tripper, drawing out the pin 0 from engagement with the escapement a, and causes an alarm to be sounded.

By this means it will be seen the door may be closed by a person going out without setting off the alarm, and when the door is opened the alarm is sounded without removing the device from the jamb.

G represents an eyeletpost fastened to the face-plate A, having an opening, 9, for the passage of a wire or cord, one end of which is to be attached to the tripper O at 0 and the other end to any door or window. Such a cord or wire is shown at H, provided with a hook, h, to engage with an eye, h. By pro viding a series of these eyes the hook may be made to engage with one of them at any altitude, so as to sound an alarm if moved therefrom, or to permit the adjustment of the cord to an elevated position during the day-time, when not required, and lowered at night for use. i

The function of the eyelet-post Gr, inconnection with the alarm, is, that it serves as a guide to the cordH, proceeding from the tripper 0, so that when the sash to which said cord is connected is moved the tripper will be released and the alarm caused to sound. The trippe'r, therefore, operates both in connection with the door and the sash.

For a stationary alarm a fixed fastening, K, secured by screws k 70, may be substituted for the clamp D.
