CHRISTIAN E. MANNER, OF I-IOMESTEAD,FLORIDA,
COTTON-PICKERS SACK.
7 Application filed May 18,
The present invention relates to improvements in cotton pickers sacks and has for its principal object to provide means for reinforcing the. bottom portion of th'esack which normally drags along the ground.
soon become worn and the sack is thereby rendered useless.
It is therefore a salient object of the present invention to provide a means for preventing undue wear being sustained by the bottom lower end portion of thesackand to this end I provide a reinforcing flap, which is secured on the bottom of the sack at the lower end portion thereof to extend for substantially the full width-of the sack and to have a portion of the flap extending over the closed lower end and secured to the top portion of the sack at the lower endthereof.
A, further object is to provide a cotton pickers sack of the above mentioned char acter, which will be strong and durable, as
well as simple in construction and inexpensive in its manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will be apparent during thecourse of the following detailed description.
in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application and in which like reference characters designate like parts throughout the views: v
Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the cotton pickers sack embodying my inven? tion, and i V Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken approximately on the line 22 of Figure 1.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is-shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates generally a cotton pickers sack wherein the same comprises the top andbottom plies 2 and 8 respectively, the same be ing stitchedtogether along their side edges in theconventional manner. The sack is preferably formed of a single length of fabric which is folded, intermediate its ends as at 4, and-the front or top side 2 is a shorter 1927.- Serial No. 192,297. 7
length than the bottom or back side 3 and this isclearly illustrated in Figure 1.
The side edge portions of the back or bottom 3 above the upper edge ofthe front or top side 52 are folded'inwardly and are stitched to the upper edge portion of the bottom side 3 to provide reinforcing portions 5 to which i are secured thefree ends of a shoulder strap 6. In this manner the upper end of the sack is open while the lower end is closed and the sack being of relatively great length, the lower end portion thereof will drag along the ground, when the bag is in use and the strap 6 is disposed over the shoulder of the cotton picker. p
improved protecting means for that portion of the sack which drags along the ground comprises an elongated flap 7 also formed of fabric of substantially the same material, used in the construction of the sack 1 and this flap has its longitudinal edges folded back upon the body portion of the flap and stitched thereto to provide reinforced side edges 8. This flap 7 is of substantiallythe same width as the width of the sack 1 and the upper edge portion of the reinforcing flap is stitched to the intermediate portion of the bottom or back side 3 of the sack 1 as indicated at 9 with reference more particularly to Figure 2. This flap covers the lower portion of the back or bottom side 3 of the sack 1 and the lower end of this flap extends beyond the closed end 4 of the sack, as well as theclosed lower end thereof so that when the sack is dragged over the ground, the bottom 3 of the sack will not" come in contact with the ground. This re inforcing flap will be the only portion of the sack which'is subjected to wear'while beingdragged over the ground and should this reinforcing flap become worn or otherwise rendered impractical for further use, the same can be readily removed and a new fiapattached to the sack.
The provision of a reinforcing flap of this character will save considerable expense. This reinforcing flap will further prolong the life or durability of the cotton pickers sack and will not, in any way interfere with the use of the sack in the gathering of the cotton and will furthermore add little or no weight to the bag. l
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that Various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted'to, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the-scope of the appended claim.
hat I claim is:
The combination with a cotton pickers sack; of a reinforcing flap of substantially the same width as the sack, the side edges of the flap being folded back upon the body portion of the flap and being stitched thereto,
the upper edge of the flap being stitched to the intermediate portion of the bottom side of the sack, said flap extending downwardly beyond the closed lower end of the sack to completely coverthe bottom side of the sack at the lower end portion thereof, the depending portion of the flap being folded back upon the front side of the sack and stitched at the free end portion thereof to the top
