A third important object of the invent-ion is to provide an improved form of lock for chests having` hinged lidsvvherein the hinges themselves will, when the lid is in fully closed position, :torni the main locking means, the

leaves of the hinges being secured. against swinging movement upon the lid being placed in its fully closed position.

Vith the above and yother objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in generalofy certain novel details of co struction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described7 illustrated in' the accompanying drawings and specifically claimed. ,e

The lid is connected to the body of the chest by a pair of hinges each of whichhas a shorter leal 1'? and a longer leaf 18. The shorter leaIn of each hinge is slidably mounted on the rear portion of a respective plate 14, the mounting' being effected in the following manner. In the leaf 17 is formed a pair of longitudinal slots 19 of T-shape in crossv section and in each slot is litt/ed a T-shaped guide block 2O secured to the plate lll by screws 21.V sliding moveinent'on the plate 14. The long leaf 18 is screwed .firmly to the underside of the lid 18. In order to aid in keeping the back ofthe. lid from being sprung up there is mounted on the Wall ll a pair of eye plates 34 and in recesses 35 in the underside of the top pin members 36 which, when the lid is closed, as in Figure 9, will engage in said eye plates upon the lid Abeing slid forwardly, the lid' in saidv figure being shown as closed but not slid forwardly to its'final position for closing the chest. There has thus been provided a simple and efficient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.`

It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the formand construction of the invention without departing from the materialy spirit thereof. It is not, therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is:

l. In a device of the kind described,a plate having a key hole slot at one end, a hinge having a short leaf slidably mounted on said plate and a long leaf foldable to bring its free end `over the key hole slot, and a headed pin carried by said long leaf and engageable in said key hole slot to enter the wide endy and slide into the narrow end.

In combination, a chest having front, rear and endwalls, a lid for said chest, a pair of plates mounted` on the top of said .end walls and each having a key` hole slot adjacent its front end, a pair Ofhinges each having a short leaf slidably mounted on a respective plate at thel rear end thereof,y saidhinges each having a long leaf secured to the underside of said lid, a headed rpin adjacent the free end of each long leaf and adaptedto enter the Wide end of the respect-ive key hole slot and move into the narrow end by sliding of the hinge on the plate, said plates each Valso having'a pin holeopening therein, and

spring pressed retractile pins carried by said long leaves and positioned to enter'said' pin y holes upon the headedy pins being moved into the narrow ends ofthe key hole slots..
