MPETERS, PHOTO LlTHOGRAFHER. WASHINGTON. D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIon ARVIN G. TIOKNER, OF SYRACUSE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN DEVliJES FOR PREVENTING HORSES FROM CRIBBING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 68,683, dated October 11, 1875; application filed September 25, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anvnv O. (Brennan, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Preventing Horses from Oribbing, of which the following is a specification:
The object of this invention is to prevent the habit of cribbing or Wind-sucking in horses and effectually cure the same; and it consists in a metallic collar, adapted to be secured loosely around the horses neck by means of a leather strap, and held to the neck by means of a spring provided with one or more spurs, and attached to one end of the strap passing around the neck of the horse, in such manner that the movement of the muscles in the act of cribbing or wind-sucking will cause the spurs to prick the horse and put a stop to the bad habit.
In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my invention, and Fig. 2 an edge and side view of the same, in which- The letter A represents the collar, constructed of flexible metal, such as steel or brass, one
end of which is lapped over outwardly, forming a loop or recess, B, for the spring 0, which carries the spurs D, the inner walls of said loop being pierced to allow the spurs to reach the neck of the horse, as shown at E. To the other end of the metallic strap is secured a trap, F, of leather or other suitable material,
in position.
and on the outside of said collar is secured a spring-plate, Gr, between which the mane of the horse may be grasped, and the collar held H represents a strap secured to the end of the spring 0 at one end, and provided with a buckle, -I, at the other, by means of which the two may be connected and confined loosely around the horses neck.
In its normal position the spring 0 setsaway from the aperture E; but when the muscles of the neck of the horse are swollen by the act of cribbing, by tightening the leather strap will draw the spring inward, and cause the spurs to prick the animal, causing him to stop at once, and, after a little experience, to give up the habit. I
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, 1s-
The metallic collar A, provided with means for holding it in place, as set forth, in eombi-' nation with the spring 0, provided with the spurs ,D and the strap F, which passes under the neck of the horse, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
J ARVIN O. TIGKNER.
