IMPROVEMENT IN TRUNK-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 168,677, dated October 11, 1875; application filed September 4, 1875.
I 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. FOURESTI'ER SIMP- SON, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Trunk-Fastenings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawmgs.
My invention relates to the construction of a fastening for trunks in such a manner that the strap in front is dispensed with, and the trunk may be shut down, even when overfilled, by the-force of a lever acting upon the top. The drawing represents a trunk partly open, of which D is the body and G is the top, having attached to it thelever A, which is hinged to the body of the trunk at its end F, and is connected at the point G to arod, B, at the end of which rod is a hook which engages in the loop or staple E. At the end of the lever A is an opening which engages with the catch H, and to which may be attached, a look, if desired. The trunk being filled and partly closed the hook at the end of the rod is connected with the loop E, and the lever being pressed down the top is brought to its place with a force increasing as the resistance increases, and the trunk is thus tightly closed, and is safely held by the catch H.
The apparatus may be attached to the top, and the hook put on the body, of the trunk, the purpose of my invention being accomplished when, by a lever pivoted to the top or body of the trunk, and having provision for instantaneous connection with the alternate part, the top may be drawn forcibly down and held firmly in place.
I claim as my invention- In combination with the body and top of a trunk the lever A and hooked rod. B, constructed and operating substantially as described.
