A FOLDABLE CHAIR. i
Application filed October 14, 1927.-v Serial IL10. 226,066. e l
This invention relates to foldable chairs and has for one object to provide a seat or chair which can be folded up into acompact space or can be promptly changed from a folded condition to an open one and in which latter position it constitutesa lirmand Vreliable support; Y
. Another object is to provide a back hing- Aedly mounted onthe back legs'of the chair,
lo and a seat hing'edly mounted on the back and ladaptedto, be supported by thelegs of the chair in such a manner as to rigidly lock the back when in its uprightl positionon the. chair.
Another obj ect is to provide fol dable braces forithe chair, said `braces having means for automatically extendingv the same when the.
chairis in its open position, the said braces being normally held in said extended position by said means. With ythe above and Referring now more ,particularly to thel dra.wings,-we .provide front leg units compris-V Q ing front leg elementsl connected vand braced.
yby rungs 2 and rear leg units comprising rear vrleg elements 3 connected and braced by rungs 4 each front leg element 1 is connected to an-dA braced from its corresponding. rear leg element 3 by means of spaced having its front member y6 pivoted to the front leg brackets 7 an l 'tsrear member 8 pivoted to therear leg brackets rear end of saidfrear member Sis provided with a segmental gear y10 meshing with aspring setir'ackr bar 11 slidablymounted inthe `said rearleg brackets 9 for movement paralleltol the said Y rear leg element 3, the said'rack bar 11.1having hib.
12, the other endof said springbeing fastened tol one end of aspring 12, the other end of said spring being fastened to the said rear leg element 3. The said front leg elements 1 each terminates at its upper end l adapted to engage a mortise 14 provided ad= seat,v the said other objects .inview,/ our invention consistsfin the kcombination and Vofone of foldable .braces 5 its upper end fastened-to one end of a 4spring.l
in a tenon 13 jacent the front edge ofthe foldable seat 15V, of which the rear portion 16 is'mounted on the back l20, and the said seat is foldable, as by means ofhinges 17, on an axis coinciding with the longitudinal airis of said rear leg elements 3each of which also terminates in atenon '18 n adapted to be positioned between the foldable members of the seatV .15 'as by engaging corresponding recesses 19 provided inthe adj akcent edges ofsaid foldable members of said recesses, of course, serving as mortises for this purpose when the chair is in its open position as shown in Figure 2. A
dependent hinge bar 21 is journaled in bearings 22 mounted on the back face ofthe rear leg element 8. Spring set latch bolts 23 are slidably mounted on the under side of the seat 15 adjacent to the front edge thereof, and adapted to engage latches 24 mounted on the L front face Vofthe front leg elements 1. A locking element 25 is pivoted atone end medially n the rear leg elements 3 and isprovided with an arcuate slot 26l engaging a pin 27 positioned on the said rear legelement, and
the other-end of said 'locking element 25 is en@A formed with a hook element 28v adapted to engage alpin' 291moufnte`d on the corresponding front leg element 1. VThe front member 6 and the rear member 8 of the Yfoldable braces :5 are pivotally connected as at 30,?tlie said 'rear member "8 having a stopY element 31 :adapted to engagea'. corresponding slot 32 in ythe front member 6, whereby thev saidv braces 5 are foldable upwardly only.
n In use, the chair being` in its as shown in Figure 3, the locking element 25 is unhooked .from the pin 29, thus permitting the front leg element-s 1 to be moved out# Wardly from the `rear leg'elements '3, so as to take the'r open positionpvhilethe spring .12"urges the rack bar'11 upwardly throughthe brackets 9; the said `rack bar engaging the 'i gears 10 on the rear members 8 of the foldable braces 5 causes saidbrackets 9 downwardly to a horizontal the same to pivotv about ythe position whereupon the stops Blof said rear member 8 engagingthe'slots 32 in the front member 6 prevent further downwardmovementof said rearmembers`v 8 and at the same time lock th'e said braces 5 so as to firmlypoyfsitionthe said front Vleg elements 1 relative-rv '.ly to the rear leg elements 3 inthe'ir .extended or open position. Th'evback 20 Vand the seat 15 with it is now rotated about'the bearings 22 until the recesses19 in the foldable member 1G of the seat, engage the tenons .1.8 of' the rearl leg elements 3. The other foldable member of the seat 15 is then pivoted about the hinges 17 until the said seat rests upon the leg elements, as shown in Figure 2, the mortises 1li engaging the tenons 13 of thefront leg elements 1 and the recesses 19 of the seat engaging the said tenons 18 of the rear leg elements 3 so as to firmly position the same between the Vadjacent edges of foldable membersofthe said seat 15 whereby the back 20 is prevented `from vrotation about the bearings v22 by reason of the fact that any sucli'movement will be resisted by the cngagementof the said seat 15 with the said tenons 18. As a furf wards the rear leg elements 3 until the hook element 28 may engage the pin 29, thus locking the chair inits folded position, as shown in Figure 3.
While We have herein described a certain specific method of construction and assembling the elements of our invention, it is understood saine may be varied in minor details, not ydeparting vfrom the spirit of our invention as defined in the appended claims.
We claim: d i' 1. A foldable chair having front and rear .leg units, av foldable brace connecting said units, a gear provided atone end of said brace, and.' a spring set` rack bar slidably mounted on the rear leg unit and engaging said gear.

gaged between tliefoldable' members of said seat.
5. A foldable chair comprising front and rear leg units, a back hinged to thev rear leg unit, a foldable seaty mounted on said/back and adapted to restvuponsaid leg.units, said seat including front and rear members foldable along an axis coineiding'with the longi-V tudinal axisv of lsaid rear leg unit, springV set foldable braces connectingthe frontlegunit with the rear leg unit, and locking means mounted on said seat adapted to engage said front leg unit. l v d '6. A foldable chair vcomprising a front leg Vunit and a rear leg unit, a backhinged to the t rear leg unit, a foldable seat mounted on said back and adapted torest upon said leg units, said seat including front and rear members foldable 'alongan axis coincidingwith the Y longitudinal axis ofsaid rear leg unit, the
foldable members of said seat having corre# sponding recesses adapted to engage the upper end of said rear legV unit thereinbetween, spring set foldable braces connecting the front leg unit with the rear leg unit, and locking means mountedon said seat adapted to engage said'fiont legunit.
