UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENGT M. 'W. HANSON, DECEASED, LATE OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, BY EINAR A. HANSON, OF WEST HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, AND CLARENCE.E. WHITNEY, F HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, EXECUTORS, NOW BY RESIGNATION EINAR A. HAN- SON, SOLE EXECUTOR.
V REST'FOR KNIFE EDG'ES.
Original application filed July 9, 1923, Serial No. 650,292. Divided and this application filed November 11, 1926.
This is a division of the Bengt M. W. Hanson application Serial No. 650,292, filed July 9, 1923, and entitled Testing-or measuring apparatus.
The present invention has particular reference to V rests for knife edges and has as its object to provide a rest of this sort of novel and advantageous construction.
More particularly, an aim of the invention is to provide a V rest, the V of which is characterized by its accuracy and sharpness. In the accompanying drawing, the figure shows in elevation, the improved V rest and the knife edge associated therewith.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the V rest includes a pair of blocks 11 and 12 which may be positioned within a recess 13 in a part or support 14. The blocks may be held in place in the recess in any suitable manner, as by means of screws 15. The two blocks have abutting plane surfaces 16, and the corresponding corners of the blocks, where these blocks meet, are bevelled as at 17 so as to form a cylindrical V. The advantage of this arrangement is that, from a practical standpoint, it is very difficult, to say the least, to cut in a single block a V, the corner or angle of which is sharp. With the present arrangement, however, the V rest may be made Serial No. 147,758.
with extreme accuracy and at a greatly redu'ced cost. After the sides of the blocks 11 and 12 have been properly faced, they may be positioned side by side in accurate alinement and then the corresponding corners of the blocks may be bevelled off with the as surance that these two beveled facesare at the same angle. The blocks are then posi-- tioned in the recess 13, as shown in the drawing, and, obviously, Where the bevelled faces meet is a sharp, accurate corner which re- 40 ceives a knife edge, designated by the numeral 20. g
What is claimed is:
' 1. A knife rest including a. pair of alined blocks positioned end to end and having the adjacent corners at the meeting faces similarly bevelled to form a V.
2. A V rest for knife edges includinga support having a recess, a pair of blocks positioned end to end and fitting-closely within the recess, said blocks having the adjacent corners at the meeting faces similarly bevelled to form a V, and means for securing said blocks in said recess.
