The invention generally relates to display I signs of the changeable type wherein thedishaving a hand hold at one end by which the stick may be manipulated, character prong receiving grooves in the stick and extending through oneend and adapted to removably 'receive the character prongs and hold the characters in perfect alignment, indicia positioned relatively to said grooves to'facilitate proper spacing of the characters, and an abutment edge orflange to engage the sign and guide the'mounting of the characters in a proper line.

With the above and other objects in view that will hereinafter appear, the invention still further resides in the novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of whichv will be first fully described, then be particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a face view of the characters aligning and applying stick, a series of characters being indicated in dotted lines.

In the drawing, in Figures 3 and 4:, I have illustrated a series of characters 6, of types of which changeable signs are commonly composed and it is to be understood that the characters may comprise letters, numerals, punctuation marks, and fancy designs of various sizes, shapes and styles such as are usually employed in the building up of changeable signs.

As will be observed by reference to Figures 3, 4 and 5 of the drawings the prongs bear space d relation in projection from the characters and also hear fixed relation with the upper and lower limits of the letters so that when the prongs are arranged in alignment as indicated by the light lines'in Figures 3 and a, such alignment of the prongs will assure the desired alignment of the characters as indicated in the said figures. i

In building up a sign, or in other words, in applying the characters to form the display proper spacing of the characters and "for greatly facilitating the assembly and application of the characters in their proper grouping and spaced relations.

This means which forms the subject matter of my present invention comprises an ap plicator stick 9 in the nature of a flat body formed of celluloid, aluminum, sheet steel, fibre, or any other suitable flat sheet. ma-. terial', and which includes a handle lOfat one end and a relatively long'rectangularflatbody portion. The flat body portion is'provided with a pair of spaced parallel grooves 11 ex tending from a point adjacent the juncture of the handle with the body and through the op posite end of said stick. The uppermost face of the stick is also provided with suitable gradations or scale indicia indicated at 12 preferably formed along the upper edge de-' fining the uppermost groove 11, and the said gradations may be made in the usual inch and eighth inch divisions of the usual linear measure, or of any other divisions found practical and desirable.

The body of the stick 9 at its uncture with the handle is also provided with down turned flanges 13 bearing'cooperative relation with the grooves of the stick so that whenthe stick is laid against an edge of a sign board with the flanges flatly abutting that edge the desired position of the grooves relatively to the face of the sign board will be attained. This relation of the flanges with the grooves may, of course, be varied according to the par ticular use to which the stick is tobe put;

From the fore oing description, taken in connection with t 1e accompanying drawings,

it is thought that the novel details of construction, the manner of use and the advantages of my invention will be readily apparent, to those-skilled in the art to which. it relates.
