The face of the plate 2 may be of one color and characters such as 24 are superposed thereon which have tabs or lugs 26 receivable in the pockets. In this way the characters are readily attached to and removed from the plate and are held against shifting thereon.

As will be seen the characters are readily and easily inserted in the pockets and removed therefrom to facilitate the interchangeability thereof. Vhere a relatively long sign is used the pockets may be spaced at desired intervals therealong to receive and accommodate various characters such as letters and the like.

In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 4, a sign S comprises a front plate 30 and rearwardly extending flanges such as have been described in connection with igs. 1, 2 and 3. In this form of the invention an auxiliary plate or decorative membersuch as 32 is associated with a front plate 30. \Vhere the sign is made from metal which may be diflicult to color, this plate 32 may be made of relatively thin celluloid or the like, of a certain color and it is secured to the plate in some suitable manner as by means of rivets 34.

By securing an auxiliary member such as 32 to the plate 30, it is possible to take advantage of the finish and the color of such material as celluloid and the like, and in that way overcome difficulties experienced with the coloring of the plate 30.

In this form of the invention the member 32 is provided with a plurality of pockets 36 which as in the previous case are formed by slotting the material and pressing the body thereof outwardly so as to form pockets to have open sides directed towards one another.

Characters 24 as is in the former case have lugs 26 which are receivable in the pockets 36 in the manner explained. In this form of the invention the characters may be of one color and varied in relation to the color of the plate 32.

In the form of the invention shown in Fig. 5 the sign S has a forward plate 40 and upper and lower flanges such as have been described which extend rearwardly therefrom. The plate 40 is provided with pockets 46 which may be formed by slitting the plate 40 and pressing portions thereabove outwardly beyond the plane of the face of the plate, after the manner described in connection with Fig. 1.

A sign of the class described comprising in combination, a plate member having relatively yieldable spaced flanges at the rear side thereof for embracing a support, an auxiliary plate member overlying said first-named plate member, pockets associated with one of said plate members and a character having lugs receivable in said pockets.

5. A sign of the class described comprising in combination, a plate member having relatively yieldable spaced flanges at the rear side thereof for embracing a support, an auxiliary plate member overlying said firstnamed plate member, pockets associated with one of said plate members and a character having lugs receivable in said pockets, the said auxiliary plate being secured to the first-named plate.

6. A sign of the class described comprising in combination, a plate, an auxiliary plate secured thereto having pockets formed on its forward face and characters overlying said auxiliary plate having lugs recelv- I able in said pockets whereby said characters are held in position.

7. A sign of the class described comprising in combination, a plate having pockets on the forward face thereof provided with openings, an auxiliary plate having openings around said pockets and lugs receivable in said pockets and a character overlying said auxiliary plate having lugs in said pockets.
