' error. gimme; or SANrimivcisedonn ronumi I LATCH.
"Application filed June 18,
' of a latch for a light door, the body of the;
latch being adapted to be punched or other-I wiseformed from suitable sheet material.
Another object is the provision of a door. latch having a latch pin adapted to befixed 10 to .the door casing, and capable of adjustment to take up play and to adapt it to either flush or lip doors.
Another object'is the provision of a latch so designed as to be reversible, so that it may be used on either right handor left hand doors.
This invention possesses other objects and features of advantage,-some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth in the following description of the preferred form of my invention which is illustrated in the drawings'accompanying and forming part of the,
specification. It is to be understood that I do not limit myself to the showingmade by said drawings and description, as I. may
adopt variations of the preferred form within the scope of my invention as set forth in the claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the latch and a portion of the door and door frame with which it is used.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectionalview, the plane of section being indicated by the line. 22 of Figure 1.
Broadly considered, my invention comprises a latch for cupboard or" other light doors. The body of the latch may be formed by stamping from suitable sheet material, .40 and is apertured to receive a pivot pin adapt- I ed to be rigidly seated adjacent the edge ofa door. A wing is provided on each side of thebody so as to make the latch reversible,
- and therefore adapted for use on either, right or left hand doors. An adjustable latch pin is also provided to be positioned upon the door casing so that one of the wlngs can be brought into engagement with the latch pin to secure the door. V
In greater detail my inventlon comprises a headed pivot pin, such as a wood screw 6, adapted to be driven rigidly into the outer face of a door 7, adjacent one of the edges thereof other than the hinged edge.
The body 8 of the latch, preferably stamped V from a metal sheet, is apertured to enable it 1927. Serial No. 199,641.
to be mounted for pivotal movement'upon the pin-6, and is provided upon its under side Least 1 with aboss 9 having a'face 11 of'relatively I large area,.and preferably concentric with .60 the. pivot pin. This arrangement of the 1 parts enables the'body to be 'spaced'away p from the face of the door, thus obviating the The face 11 of the necessity ofa washer. bossis preferably. concave so thatythe area of contact-between the latch and the door is a relatively narrow annulus surrounding the pivot pm, with the result that a minimum of frictional resistance is offered to movement of the latch.
An operating handle 12 is provided, pref erably integral with the. body and offset therefrom to space it'from the door to facili tate grasping. A spring 14 for resisting the movement of the body is interposed between. itand the door. in the form of a broken circle surrounding the boss 9. and has its ends 16 bent upwards from the plane of the circle to be secured to the'under side of the operating handle by the lugs 17. The spring is provided, opposite the break, with a loop 18 through which a suitable brad or screw 19 may be driven to secure the spring to the door. It is thus seen that the spring normally retains the latch with the operating handle 12 parallel with the adjacent edge of the door.
This spring is preferably I the brad 19, which, in operating position, lies within the recess. I
Formed preferably integral with and on opposite sidesof the body are wings26, one
or the other'of which is adapted to extend beyond the edge of the door. By the provision of these oppositely disposed wings a reversible latch is provided, applicable to, r
Alatch pin having a threaded shank 27 either right or left hand doors.
and a substantially hemispherical head 28, is adapted to be so. positioned" on the door casing 29 that. it may be engaged by theextending wing. The head-28 is preferably provided. with screw driver slots 81 to facilitate adjustment of the pin so that play be tween the head 28 and the .wing is taken up,
and so that the same equipment is adaptable I to flush doors or'to lip doors of varying thicknesses. j j
To open the door the latch has merely to be:
rocked on its pivot pin to disengage the wing from the latch pin; and When the door is closed, the latch is automaticallyfastened by the wing sliding over'the inclinedsurfaceof the head 28 of the latch pin until the 'wing is snapped under the head by the action of the spring. v a
I claim: 7 r g 1. A door latch comprising a latch pin to the door; and a reversible body mounted for pivotal movement on said pivot pin and comprising an operating handle, a shoulder for limiting the movement of the body, wings on opposite sides of the body for engaging the latch'pin, a boss for spacing the body from the door, and a spring interposed between the body and the door forurging the latch into position of engagement.
A door latch comprising a'body adapted to be pivotally mounted to a door, a latching Wing on said body, a handle onsaid body, a spring arrangedbetween said body and its mounting for urging the ing into anengaged position, and a pin for securing said spring tothe door, said pin cooperating With a recess formed in the body to form a stop against excess movement of the latch. adapted to beadjustably fixed to the door casing; ahead'ed pivot pin adapted to be fixed 3, A door latch comprising a pivot pin adapted to be fixed to a door, a body arranged 'for pivotal inov'ement'upon said pin, a boss on said body for spacing the body from the door, and a spring forming abroken circle surrounding said boss and having i-ts'ends securedto said body and'its center secured to the'door.
In testimony whereof, I have'hereunto set.
myhand.
