IMPROVEMENT IN ROTARY CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,506, dated October 5, 1875; application riled September 27, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WM. R. LAMPTON, of Knightsville, in the county of Clay and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Churn or Ice-Cream Freezer with Fan Attachment; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a churn operated by clock-work, and so arranged as to be used as an ice-cream freezer, and the the clock-work by'suitable mechanism connecting'with and operating a fly-brush and a fan, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of the churn with the side eler ation of the operatin g mechanism and attachments. Fig. 2 shows detached parts of the operating mechanism.
A represents the base of my machine, upon which is secured a cylinder, B, of suitablediameter. lrVithin this cylinder is a smaller cylinder, 0, suspended by arms at the top and bottom in such a manner as to be removed from the sides and bottom of the exterior cylinder, and thus form a chamber all around and under the interior cylinder. From the interior cylinder 0 at the bottom extends a faucet, a, through the exterior cylinder, and said exterior cylinder is provided with a similar faucet, I). The cylinders B O are covered at the top by a cover made in two parts, E E, fastened together in the center by hooks or D is a central shaft, having its lower bearing in a foot or step, e, in the center of the bottom of theinterior cylinder, and extending up through the top cover.
By means of crossbars f f two rods or wires, h It, are attached parallel with the shaft D, forming a frame, to which is secured a spiral concave, D, which is perforated, as shown, and extends from top to bottom of the inner cylinder 0. This spiral concave forms the churn-dasher, which, when revolving, forces the cream downward, causing a violent agitation of the same, and breakingit thoroughly. On the cover is secured a case, G, containing a clock-work, which gears with a pinion, t, on the shaft D, and thereby communicates motion to the da'sher.
I prefer to use a fan or fly brush attachment with the foregoing; and to this end the shaft D is extended up a suitable distance above the casing G, and at its upper end provided with a bevel -pinion, k, which gears with a bevel-wheel, H, mounted on a horizontal shaft,
m, having its bearings in standards on top of the case. On the rear end of the shaft m is a crank, n, connected, by pitmen p p, with two elbow-levers, I I, pivoted at their angles to posts 'r 1". On the pivot of each elbow-lever I is pivoted a fanholder, J, in which is formed a quadrant, it, so as to adjust the fan-holder at any desired angle to the elbow-lever by means of a set-screw, s. K is a perforated arm, also attached to the pivot of the elbow'lever I, and to this arm is to be attached a cord to connect with a fly-brush, so that the machinery may be placed in the kitchen, while the fly-brush is in the diningroom.
It wil thus be seen that the same clockwork operates the churn, fans, and fly-brush.
The chamber between the two cylinders of the churn is to be filled with cold or warm water, as required, for regulating the temperature of the cream in the interior cylinder.
The churn may also be used as an ice-cream freezer by placing ice and salt in the chamber between the two cylinders.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isp The combination of the exterior and interior cylinders B O, with faucets a b, central shaft D, with frame f h, and spiral perforated concave D, all substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
