SAFETY DOOR FASTEI TER.
Application filed July 23, 1927. Serial No. 207,889.
My invention relates to safety door fastenors and refers particularly to safety door fasteners adapted for use with doors and windows.
One of the objects of my invention; is a safety door fastener which firmly retains a door, or window, in closed position.
Another object of my invention is a doorlocl: which allows a door, or window, to be fastened in partly open position.
Another object of my invention is s, fety door-fastener which can be positioned for full opening of a door, or window, only when the door, or window, is. in closed position.
A burglar-proof safety door fastener, to be effective, must be strong in construction, capable of fastening a door, or window, firmly from intrusion and of such character that it can not be tampered with from the outside.
In a broad way, the safety door fastener of my invention comprises a strongly constructed bolt pivotally attached one end to a door frametor windowv frame, the other end of the bolt being removably attached to the door frame, or window frame. The door, or window, carries a pivotal latch, the free end of which is movable within a slot in the bolt and removable therefrom only when the door, or window, is closed. My devicealso comprises means for fastening'it in an extended position when the "door, or window, is partly opened. I also enclose means for fastening the elements of my device to the door frame, or window frame. and the door,
or window. in such a manner that such fastening means are hidden and difiicult, not impossible, of access from without the door. Further, my device is of such construction that it can be employed with either a righthand, or left-hand, door, or window.
Among the advantages of my device are the following It can not be unfastened from without, either when the door, or window, is in closed position, or in partly open position.
i The latch being rigid, the door, or window, is in fixed partly open position, and hence, can be maintained in ventilating; position.
My device, therefore, acts as a burglarproof safety door-fastenerand asa ventilating; device and, when employed in th latter capacity, prevents the opening of the door, or window, and the entrance of an'intruder.
carryi The above, and other, valuable feautres of my device will be. evident upon aconsideration of this specification ant its accompanyorawlngs. In the accompanying drawings, illustrating" modified forms ofthe device of my invcntion, similar parts are designated by'similar numerals.

section through line 74 of Figure 10 isa topview of a modified form of fa stenin g member.
Figure 11.is top view of a washer capable of use with my device.
The particular form of the safety doorfastener of my invention, shown in Figures 1, 2, l, 5, 6, 8 and 9 of the accompanying drawings, comprises a door-frame'plate12, fixedly attached to the door-frame 13 by means of the screws 14, 1 1, 1a and the screweye 15. The screw-eye 15 passes through the rubber noise-absorbing washer 16. The two threaded bolts 17, 17 are then threaded within holes within the extended portion 18 of the.
A fastening member consists of a plate 20 having a key-hole opening therein, the larger portion 21 of the opening being above the narrower portion 22. The plate 20 is extended angularly into the portion 23, which ure 1 is a front view of a closed door the line 9-9 washer 27. The screw 26 has its outer por tion cut away into a rectangular shaped member 28"which fits snugly into the opening 22 to prevent the fastening member from swinging when it is in its dependent,or unfastened, position.
' A bolt 29is swingingly carried bythe eyescrew 15 by means of the ring 30. The bolt 29 has a longitudinal opening 31 for purposes explained later. Pivotally attached to the bolt 29 by means of the screw 32 is a catch 33 having the recess 34 and the knob 35. A
The door plate 37 is fixedly attached to V the door 38 by means of the screws 39, 39, 39.
The centering member 40 having an opening therethrough, carries the washer 41, the pivotal fastening latch 42, the washer 43 and the loclcring 44. i The casing .45 is threaded to the annular extension 46 of the door plate 37 and the whole afiixed to the door 38 by means of, the screw 47.
The fastening latch 42, which is pivotally carried by the door mechanism, comprises a bent arm 48 extended into an annular member 49 terminating in the knob, or ball, 50, which is slidable within slot 31 of the bolt 29, the ball 50 preventing its removal therefrom except at the upper portion of the slot. 7
j The door 38 also carries the ordinary catch, or lock, 51.
The modification, shown in Figure 3, is adapted for use where the door is practically in the same plane as the door-frame, in which case, the angle of the member 48 of the fastening latch 42 is somewhat different from that described.
In the modification, shown in Figure 10, the fastening member is positioned by the side of the frame plate 12, instead of beneath it,
as described. In this case, the fastening member 52 is pivotally attached to the door frame 13 by means of the screw 53 and extends outwardly 54 and then inwardly 55 having the concave member 56 to engage the bolt 29. A split-spring washer 5.7 is positioned between t e fastening member portion 52 and the head of the screw 53.
Fi re 11 illustrates a washer 58, capable of being placed between the door 38 and the door plate 37, if necessary, to bring the doorplate mechanism in proper alignment with the bolt 29 to compensate for the depth of insertion of the door within the door frame.
The operation of the device is as follows: When the deviceis in fastened position,
as shown particularly in Figures 4 and 7, the
until the member 49 of the latch member is" within therecess 34 of the catch 33, thus -1naintaining the door 38 in fixed open position.
In order to fully open the door'38, it is closed, the bolt29 is moved inthe plane of the door, butaway therefrom, which allows the ball 50 of thclatch to be removed from the slot-31 of the bolt 29 raised into the dot-and-dash lines ofFigure 4 and the door can then be opened. 1 7
From the above it will be noted that by means of my device, a door maybe securely fastened in closed position, that the doormay be fastened in a partly opened position and that the device can be positioned for the full opening of the door only when the door is in closed position.
It is evident, therefore, that when thedoor is in fastened open position, an intruder can not open the door further, because to do so,-
the latch being then i 1. In a safety door-fastener, in combination,

6. In a safety door fastener, in combination, a frame-plate adapted tobe attachedtoadoorframe; an eye-shaped member extending from V the frame-plate;-means preventing the removal of the eye member: a bolt having a longitudinal slot therein suspend ed from said eye; pivotal means for removably fastening the free end of the bolt to the frame-plate; a door-plate adapted to be attached to a door; a rigid pivotal latch carried by the door-plate the free end of the latch being); slidably movable Within said slot, said latch beingnonremovable from said slot When a door to which the door-plate is attached is closed and the free end of the bolt is fastened and removable thercfrom only at the suspending end'of the bolt when the bolt is moved away from said latch and pivotal means for fastening predetermined position Within the slot.
