Description

H.- A. POVEL' VANITY CASE Filed Jan. 6, 27
mvsmox flyaainzbe ,4, Pavel Vii/MAM ATroRNEY$ Patented Sept. 11, 1928.
' UNITED STATES PATENT OFFECE- HYACINT'HE ALPHONSE POVEL, or PARIS, rmuvcn VANITY CASE.
Application filed January 6, 1927, Serial No. 159,254, and in France December 1, 1926.
This invention relates to vanity cases and more specifically to vanity casesfor holding a powder box for face or other powder as well-as a: powder pull. The invention relatesFparticularly-to the powder box-itself which is: so constructed as to permit a. small quantit vof. powder to1be' ejected or forced there om when so desired thereby obviating any possibility of loss or waste of-thepowder. I
The principalobject'ofthe invention is the production of a vanity case-and powder box ofethe "general type heretofore described which shall befsimplei-in construction'and of ease and of low cost "to manufacture.
A further objectbf the invention is the production of avanitycase holding a powder box ian'd powder pull and a cover for the case to which a mirror is so attached that when'the cover-is in closed position on the'case the mirror will engage the pow der' pufi adjacent the'box, the powder puff providing a protective seat for the mirror and the. powder'pufi then acting from pressure of the mirror to effectively fill the space providedt-herefor and to close a discharge openingor openings in the powder box.
5 Further andcother objects of the invention will appear from the following descriptiontaken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which:
Fig. '1 is a plan view of the blank from which the body of the powder box is constructed.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank from which the tray of the powder box is con structed.
Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the parts constituting the powder box before assem bly thereof.
Fig. 4 is aperspective view of the powder box itself after the parts have been assembled.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal cross-section taken through the powder box showing it filled with powder.
Fig. 6 is a'perspective view of the vanity case with its cover in open position and with the powder box and a powder puff in position therein.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a modified form of powder box.
Referring in detail to the several figurcs of the drawing, and more particularly to Fig. 1 indicates a walled base of a vanity case having a cover 2 hinged thereto in any desirable manner. said base and cover being provided with the usual cooperating elements 3 and 4 forming a clasp whereby the cover may be frictionally held in --closed position on the base. If so desired 'the cover may also contain or hold in any convenient manner. the mirror 5. The walled base receives the powder puff 6 as well as a powder box 7 the construction of-which will presently be described in detail. The powder puff 6 and the powder boxy? fit snugly within the walled base 1 inj'uxtaposi tion to each other as shown in"F,ig.6. 1
-The blank from which the body of the powder box 7 is constructed is 's'cored1 as indicated in Fig. 1, the inner scored portions being then bent up to form walls 8 having flanges 9 thereon. Said-body is also provided with an opening IO'the rein ofa size permitting the end of theusers finger to be inserted therein. otsaid body is also provided withan aperture 11. The blank from which the tray of the powder box is constructed is indicated at 12 (see Fig. 2) and is provided with a large rectangularshaped opening l3there in and with scored portions 14' which when bent or turned up, form'the walls of the tray as indicated in Fig.3.- All of said walls are provided at their edges with ears 15. the walls 14 and is adapted to register with the aperture 11 in the body 7.
When the powder box is to be'loaded with face or other powder the various parts thereof are in the relative position shown in Fig. 3. A membrane or plate 17 ofresiL ient material such as cellophane is provided and is inserted within the body 7 with which it interfits. The tray 12' is then insorted within the body 7 and seated on the resilient membrane 17 which forms a closure for the opening 13, the tray then being filled or packed with the powder 17 (see Fig. 5). The cars 15 on the tray-are then bent inwardly at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 3 after which a closingwall 18 constructed of cardboard or any other suitable material is seated on the bent-over cars 15 and the flanges 9 are then bent over onto the closing wall 18 to lock it in position. hen the parts have been assembled as justdescribed their relative positions are shown in the sectional View Fig. 5.
hen the powder ho}: 7 has been inscii'ed in the vanity case. it in the pasition shown An aperture 16 is formed in 'on'e'of One of thewalls 8 i in Fig-:6. When. it is desired 'to'use some of thepowder, the-powder pufi is removed from the case and the resilient membrane 17 appearing through the opening 10 is tapped to an extentdependi'ng upon the amount of powder required. Some of the powder contained in the powder box is thereupon forced or jected through the aperture 11 onto the base of the vanity case and may-be collected by means of the powder puff 6 or-otherwise. lVhen the powder-box is full-of-powder the pressure of the 1133i ient membrane thereagai-nst will force it out of the aperture 1'1"when--,pressure is applied against the niem'b-rane'li but if the powder boxis partially empty the air pressure exerted-against thepowderand caused by the tappinglof-saidpresilient member ejects the powder :irjomsaid'--aperture.- lVhen the powdeywboxf-and powder puff have been planed-within the? vanity ease the powder putl" s lmts-'.ofi3or cloesihe aperture 11 thus preventing :theaccidental escape,- or loss of powder the powder box.) l
@141 will be understood 'that'yarious'rnod-ifications may bez-resorted. to without depart ing inomkhe spirit of the invention as set forth invtheialppendedt-elaims. Various defifithegconstruction of the vanity case or Ofithepowder itself could be resorted toand thet-pew'derbox may, be mounted on the-cover 2 of? the vanity case instead of being held'witbin the body thereof if so desiredp- Also :as(- shown in" the perspective view of-Fig I a-series of openings 19 could bep-rovi-ded in one of the walls 8 of the body of "the, powder: box and a similar series of openings inia wall l4of thetray 12 in which case. the/apertures 1-1 and 16 respectivelycould lie-dispensed with:
Will-benoted from Fig. 6 the mirror 5 preferably is of such size that it occupies the upper-part only ofthe cover 2 so that when the-oover-is closed the .mirror lies on the powder puli 6 adjacent the powder box, said puff acting as a protective seat for the mirror.
