GEORGE E. MIGNON, OF SHORT HILLS, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR T0 PAUL H. SMART, O1!
' NEW YORK, N. Y.
VANITY case.
Application filed October 5, 1923. Serial No. 868,784.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnoncn E. MIGNON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and a resident of Short Hills, Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved which the following is a description.-
My invention relates to a vanity case adapted to hold .face powder and rouge, for example.
More particularly the invention relates to case employing a spring-pressed follower below the face powder acting to force the powder upwardly as fast as it is consumed. 1
The main object of my invention is to provide a novel powder and rouge containing and dispensing assemblage involving a re 11 unit, the bottom of which constitutes a follower for the powder and is adapted to be engaged by the spring provided for the purpose in the container at the bottom of said container.
The nature of the invention audits distinguishing "features and advantages will clear] appear as the description proceeds.
Re erence is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this. specification, it being understood that the drawings are merely illustrative of an example of the invention.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a vanity case embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a plan view;
Fi ure 3 is a verticalsection of the refill cartridge in the form in which it is vended ready for placing in the body of the vanity case.
In carrying out my invention in accordance with the illustrated example, the vanity case is formed with a container body 10. The containerv 10 is' formed with a transversely extending vertical partition 11 dividing the container into a main compartment 12 for receiving the powder refill cartridge and a compartment 13 to accommodate a refill cartridge of rouge in powder form.
In the illustrated example advantageously the bottom 14 of the container is common to the twocompartments 12,- 13,said bottom being hinged at one end as at 15 and provided at the other end with suitable fastening means such as a catch adapted to enin the county of Vanity Case, of
gage any approved latch member 17. Simi-- larly, the cover 18 is common to both compartments and is hinged at one end as at 19.
In accordance with my invention I provide a refill cartridge 20 to contain face powder indicated at b. The refill cartridge 20 has a'loose bottom 21 constituting a follower for the owder b. Said bottom 21 rests on inturned supporting means provided at the bottom of the body of the container and preferably in the form of a flange 22 directed laterally inward from the lower edge of the side walls of the body. At the top of the refill cartridge is a perforated disk 23 having an upturned flange 24 fitting within ,the container 20 whereby the disk 23 occupies a depressed position to accommodate a pow- .der puff 0 between the disk 23 and the cover 18.
Thelower edge of the body of the container well as resistin the upward pressure exerted against the dis 23 by the pressure exerted on the powder throu h the follower bottom 21 of the refill cartri ge.
In practice, a refill cartridge is placed in the compartment 12 with the upper edge of the cartridge against the angle piece 25. The closing of the cover 11 will press the spring 24 against the under side of the follower bottom 21 of the cartridge thereby raising said follower bottom from its rest on the flange 22. The powder will thus be forced to some extent through the perforations of the disk 23 to be taken up by the powder puff c. As the powder is consumed it will be continuously fed to the disk by reason of being under pressure as described and, thus the complete contents of the cartriclgecan be consumed. When the cartridge 20 is empty it is removable as a unit includas to the powder, a spring 26 being provided on bottom 11 beneath the follower 27 on which the rouge a is supported.
I would state in conclusion that while the illustrated example constitutes a practical embodiment of my invention, it do not limit myself strictly to the exact details herein illustrated, since, manifestly, the same can be considerably varied without departure from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A vanity case, and a powder containing cartridge therefor adapted to be made up as a refill, said vanity case presenting an opening through whichthe cartridge may be entered and removed, a closure on the vanity case for said opening, and a spring in said vanity case beneath the cartridge, said cartridge having an opening in the bottom thereof, a movable bottom constituting a follower-for the'powder, said follower seating on said spring and subject to the pressure thereon for upward movement, and a perforated disk at the top of the cartridge through which der pressure of the spring-pressed follower,
said vanity case having stop means at the top to retain the cartridge.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a vanity case having an opening, a powder containing cartrid e ada ted to constitute a refill, said cartridge being enterable and removable through said opening of the case, a closure for said opening, a perforated disk in said cartridge at the top, a follower bottom in the cartridge, retaining means on the cartridge beneath said bottom, and a spring in the bottom of said case beneath said follower bottom and exerting pressure on the latter.
3, As a new article of manufacture, a vanity case having an open bottom and having an angle piece at the interior of the casing at the top, a closure for the "said open bottom, a 'powder-containing cartridge insertable and removable through said opening of the case, a perforated disk in said disk powder may exude un-' meagre cartridge at the top, a bottom in the cartridge movable vertically to constitute a follower for the powder, an internal flange on the cartridge below said bottom, and a spring on said closure and bearing against the bottom of pressure thereon.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a vanity case having an opening, and a powder cartridgev insertable and removable through said opening, said cartridge having a-bottom movable upwardly in the cartridge as a follower for the powder and having a perforated disk therein at the top,'said cartridge with its said follower bottom and its said disk being insertablc and removable as a unit through said opening in the case; together with a spring beneath said bottom and exerting upward pressure thereon.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a vanity case having an opening therein, and a refill powder cartridge inset-table and removable through said opening, said cartridge having a follower bottom therein.
6. As a new article of manufacture, a refill powder-containing cartridge for vanity cases, said cartridge havin a follower bottom therein, and a perforate disk at the top thereof and adapted'with its said bottom and disk to be inserted as a unit in a vanity case.
7. As a new article of manufacture, a powder-containing cartridge constituting a refill for vanity cases, said cartridge comprising a body having the walls thereof at the lower edge inturned, a follower bottom resting on said flange, and a perforated disk in said cartridge at the top.
8. A vanity box, a loose powder container in said box and open at its upper end, a slidable bottom for said container, a screen closing the upper end of said container, and a spring for applying pressure to yieldingly advance said bottom, said box having means to prevent accidental upward movement of the container under the power of said spring.
