LIFTING anon.
Appueation fuednprii 9,
My present improvements relate 4to improvementslin lifting jacks of the type/shown in Letters Patent No. 1,559,098, dated Gotober 27, 1925.
The main obfgi provide improved actuating; means whereby 'the 'lifting member may be rapidly raised and lowered, at the same time one which has a large amount of power.
V further object is to provide an improved actuatingmeans which can be quickly reversed or adjusted for raising or lowering` the load.
Objects relating' to detailsand economies of construction andoperation ofthe inven tion will appear 'from the detailed descrip-A tion to follow.
l.The invention is defined andpointed out inthe claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my` invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming; a part of this specilication, in which: y .l
Fig'. 1 is a perspective view ofa lifting; jack embodying' the features of my invention, the actuating lever being shown in its down `or lowered position.
Fig. 2 isa perspective view with the actuating lever in raisedfpositi'on, the lifting" lever bene; in partially elevated position.
Fig. 3 is a Jfragmentary invertedhviewof the actuating` lever and certain parts directly associated therewith.l
' Fig. lis a fragmentary view partially in section on line 4.-1 of Fig'. 3. Y
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary view of certain of the parts shown in Fig'. 4, swungor adjusted to another position. Y i j 1n the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout therseveral views. Y
Referring` to the drawings, I provide a frame consisting, in the 'embodiment illustrated, of side members l, l'connected by suitableV cross piecesr and provided with wheels 2mounted on the axle 3 land with caster wheels 4f. mounted brackets 5. Y j
The lifting lever 6 is mounted on the pivot 7 extending` between the side members of the frame. This lifting lever carries the head 8 which `is pivoted at the outer end of the lever dat 9, the lever being held in upright i position kbythe link 10 which is pivoted to the headat 11 and to the frame at 12 inV par- 'ect 'of this invention .is tov Aon laterally projectingv 1927.' semaine. leaais.
allel relation to the lever, therebyl holding thi: head in upright position during' the swing of the lifting' lever. o Y
lconnect a pair of racks 13 tothe lifting,l lever -by .means ofpivots 14, the` pivot M beine' arranged in spaced relation to the pivot 7. These levers are supported on rol-lerslii carried by a cross piece 16 on theframe. j The pinions 17 are supported bv the journals 18 to'coact with the racks. Between the pinions and connected thereto isv aratchet wheel 19. At each side of the ratchet wheel Y is a bearing 20v Lfor the forks 21 ofthe actuating lever, designated. generally by the n'uf meral 22. This actuating leveris provided with a cross bar or hand piece 23 at its outer end.- y v A. lifting' pawl 24 is mounted onthepivot 25 carried by the leverl .to coactw-ith .the
ratchet wheel, the pawl being urgedyielding vly into engagementwith the ratchet wheelby means of the spring 26, one end of which en gages the' arm 27 on the pawl and .the .other a support 28 provided 'thereforv on-the actuat# ing' lever. n l l Y A holding,` pawl 29 is pivoted on the framel at 30 to coact with the ratchet wheel, this holding'pawl being arranged at the rearyof Van the re-tchetl vwheeland provided with a-nkupf wa'rdly projecting pin or inn'er .31l to which the spring 32 is connected, thespring' acting to urge the` I ratchet.
pawl intov engagement withthe i In normal :lifting` operation,` the liftingl vpawl ratchets upon the ratchet wheel as the actuating` lever is oscillated, the holding pawl also ratcheting upon the teeth ofthe ratchet wheel to prevent` reverse rotation of the ratchet. j i,
To lower orreverse the jack, I pipviclea: reversing memberj which has arearwardly projecting inpger Scurved to'extenct overY one ofthe bearmgsjot the actuating' lever .in-v Y to .co-operating ,relation with the pin 35 on the pawl 29.` Thisreversing memberA is mounted for a combined reciprocating .and swinging movement, the reversing` member beine; 'slotted at 36 toene'agfethe bolt 37 and` lalso having' a slot 38 embracingr theipivot25, the slot 38 being` of Such dimensions .as to alf-' low a swinging as well as a reciprocating movement about the pivot bolt 37., y
At its rear end, the reversing member has a cam 39 vcoaetingwith pin 40 so` thatasgthe reversingv member 1s moved rearwardly, 1t is lll also given an Vupward swinging movement, the combined movement giving a quicker and longer lift to the holdingr pawl than would result from a mere reciprocatory movement.
The reversing rod 4l is provided with a grip 42 positioned so as to be grasped along I wi th the hand piece 23 of the actuating lever. At its outer end, this reversing rod 4l is provided with a cross piece 43, the cross piece beingpivoted to the rod at 44. The link y45 is connected to one end of this cross piece by the pivot 46, the other end of the link being connected to the lower end of the tripping lever 47.
This lever 47 is mounted on the pivot 25 and at its upper end is provided with a pin 48 engaging the slot 49 in the upwardly projecting part 5() of the reversing member. This connection permit-s of the reciprocating and swinging movement of the reversing member. The lifting pawl 24 is connected bythe link 5l which is connected to the cross bar bythe Vpivot 52 to the lifting pawl, the link 5l having a slot 53 therein engaging a pin 54 on the lifting pawl, allowing for a lost motion connection so that on the lifting movement of the jack, the pawl can ratchet or oscillate independently of the reversing -A spring 55 is connected to the lower end Vof the lever 47 and tothe lug 56 on the actuatwardly thereon and at the same time pulls on the reversing rod with the grip 42. As soon as the holding pawl is relieved of its load, the reversing member moves rearwardly and upwardly, disengaging the holding pawl from the ratchet wheel and allowing the ratchetwheel to turn in a reverse direction under the control of the actuating lever. When the actuating lever reaches. the end of 'its up-stroke, the reversing member is released and returned to its initial position by the spring 55, allowing the holding pawl to drop-into engaging position. The load is then shifted from the lifting pawl to the holding pawl, allowing the holding pawl to beretracted by a pullron the reversing rod. The pin on the holding pawlV prevents movement of the reversing member, thereby permitting the actuating lever to be swung down i for a second stroke.
