This invention relates to typewritingmachines of the type described in patent to J Wernery and Smith, No. -1,132,055',dated' March16, 1915, wherein. fan-fold work-webs are used in connection with ledger-sheets.
The outer web is fed around the platen and a heading is typed thereon, after which it is fed upwardly until the plies thereof become freed or separated, A ledger-sheet is then inserted under oroback of the front or top ply of the fan-fold web, and under 'a carbon-sheet.
The pack so formed is turned backward or downward to bring the desired writing line to the typing position. In this backward movel5 ment of the pack sufiicient friction is present between the plies and carbon-sheets to carry the ledger-sheet back therewith. The ledgersheet is made wider than the web-formsand projects some distance beyond one side of the web-pack, and there receives matter not to appear on said web-peck. The free lower edge of the ledger-sheet springs away from the platen and strikes upon the forwardly-extending upturned edge of the front collating table, or pa$es outside thereof, thus stopping the downward and backward feed ofthepack.
An object of the present-invention is to eliminate the possibility of the lower edge of the free portion of the ledger-sheet catching on or contacting with the forward edge of the paper-guide. Means is provided for deflecting said free edge backwardly and behind the front edge of the paper guide, in the back-- k to the typing ward movement of the position. An important. eature of the invention resides in the provisionof guide-devices, such as fingers or plates, preferably curved to substantially the are of the platen, the free ends of the fingers lying slightly back of the edge of the usual paper-guide, and these fingers are by preference adjustably mounted on the usual webesevering knife. The knife is formed with a marginal flange extending from end to end, upon which the guide-fingers are frictionally and adj ustably held by spring clip heads that are shaped to straddle and grlp'the flange.

The heads 16 offthe'guide-devices 15 are formed into clips to frictionally engage the flange 14.- of the knife 13. These clips have spring side-portions 18 and a connecting top portion 19 which rests on the top of the flange 14 when the guide-devices are mounted in op erative position. As shown, the guide-fingers 17 are formed integral with the forward spring sides of the clipsand constitute extensions thereof.
Referring to Figure 2 of the drawings, there is shown a ledger-sheet 20 and a fan- 'fold work-web 21 mounted on the platen 5.

.when the web-pack carrying the ledger-sheet is backed into the machine toward the typing position, the lower edge of the ledger-sheet will strike the forward edge 12 of the paperguide and 0p the back-feed movement.
The improved guide-devices above described prevent this contact of the parts by deflecting the loose free edge of the ledgersheet inward and back of the forward edge of the paper-guide, thus allowing free passage of the interleaved forms and ledger-sheet back and to the rear of the platen to the typing position.
It will be understood that changes in the construction of the features of this invention may be resorted to, for example, the flange formed on the knife may be on the underside thereof or it may be formed along the longitudinal center of the top face and may take various cross-sectional contours, for instance, it may be rounded or dovetailed and curved plates may be substituted for the guide-fingers, which may be attached to the knife in an approvedmanner.

aving thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a fan-fold typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, a front pa rtable extending above the platen at the de ivcry side thereof, a rear paper-table having a paperide extending around the under portion 0 the platen and ending at the front below'the printing line thereof, and feedrolls for feedinga fan-fold web inserted at the rear side of the platen in a forward direction, and for feeding the same rearwardly together with a front-inserted independent work-sheet wider than the fan-fold web positioned between the plies ,of a set of forms of the fan fold web, while the forms are fed to an accessible position above the front of the platen with a portion of the wide work sheet extending beyond the side of the fanfold web, of means for guiding said extending portion of the work-sheet during the rearward feeding of the fan-fold web by said feed-rolls together with said work-sheet, con-- sisting of one or more fingers extending from a position adjacent the lower edge of the front paper-table downwardly between the paper-guide and the platen, so that the edge of the extending portion of the work-sheet will not contact with the edge of the paper guide during the downward movement of the sheet into said paper-guide.
2. In a. fan-fold typewriting machine, the combination with a platen, a front papertable extending above the platen at the delivery side thereof, a rear paper-table having a paper-guide extending around the under portion of the platen and ending at the front below the printing line thereof, and feedrolls for feeding a fan-fold Web inserted at the rear side of the platen in a forward direction, and for feeding the same rearwardly together with a front-inserted independent work-sheet wider than the fan-fold web positioned between the plies of a set of forms of the fan-fold web, while the forms are fed sisting of one or more fingers extending from' a position adjacent the lower edge of the front paper-table downwardly between the paperguide and the platen, so that the edge of the extending portion of the work-sheet will not contact with the edge of the paper-guide during the downward movement of the sheet into said paper-guide, and means for adjusting said fingers longitudinally of the platen to accommodate fan-fold webs and worksheets of differentwidths.
3. In a fan-fold typewriting machine, the combination with a. platen, a web-severing knife extending across the platen and above the printing line, a paper- 'iide extending around the under portion 0 the platen an ending at the front below the printing line thereof, and feed-rolls for feeding a fan-fold web inserted .at the rear side of the platen in a forward direction, and for feeding the same rearwardly together with a front-inserted independent work-sheet wider than the fanfold web positioned between the lies of a set of forms of the fan-fold web, while the forms are in a position beyond the severingknife, with a portion of the wide work-sheet extending beyond a side of the fan-fold web, of means for iding said extending portion of the work-s eet durin the rearward feeding of the fan-fold web by said feed-rolls together with said Work-sheet consisting of one or more fingers extendin from said websevering knife into the ront end of said paper-guide, so that the edge of the extending portion of the work-sheet will not contact with the edge of the paper-guide during the downward movenient of the ,sheet'into said paper-guide.
4. In a typewriting machine havin a platen, a paper-guide, and means for fee ing a web-pack and a ledger-sheet wider than the pack-sheets and extending beyond one a side thereof and free therefrom, a knife having a flange along its forward edge, and
guide-devices frictionally carried on the flange and supported above the forward edge of the paper-guide, forward of and over the free extended portion of the ledger-sheet, each of said devices including a head having spring sides and a curved finger formed integral with the head and extending down wardly from the outer spring side of said head.
5. In a typewriting machine having a platen, a paper-guide, and means for feeding a web-pack and a ledger-sheet wider than the pack-sheets and extending beyond one side thereof and free therefrom, a ,knife arranged over the platen and having an up wardly-directed longitudinal flange at the forward edge thereof, and adjustable guide- 'of the ledger-sheet and above the paper guide, said devices each including an elongated channelled head having spring sides to engage the sides of the flange, a connectT ing top portion bearin on the top of the flange, and an integral nger projecting centrally from the forward spring side, said finger being curved, its lower end terminating slightly below and back of the forward edge of the paper-guide.
