COMBINED DRIVING MECHANISM FOR WASHING MACHINES AND WBINGERS.

My invention relates toza combined driving mechanism forwashing 'machines and wringers and the objectsof my invention are:
1. To provide a simplified combination driving mechanism for a washing machine and wringerwhich will furnish the necessary differences in driving speeds and provide for the reciprocating rotation of the washer shaft, with the smallest practicable number of parts. v r V 2. To provide a driving mechanism which will be enclosed and can be run in oil so as to reduce friction and noise with improved means for throwing it into and out of gear.
3. To provide a driving mechanism which will be out of the way and with all gears enclosed. 7 7 I v w I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which, a V

The housing is preferably of castiron or aluminum and the cover-plate may be secured thereto by any of the means now in common use for such purposes and the adjacent-surfaces of the housing, 1, and the cover-plate, 2, should be ground to form a'close fit or provided with a gasket or sealed in any other desired manner. The housing is provided with lugsone of secured to the frame of the washing machine or it may be mounted upon brackets or other supports as desired. The housing is'mounted in such a way that the washer drive shaft.-
7, lies in the line of the center of the tub of the washing machine and the shaft, 7, extendsupwardly into the tub of the washing machine. The housing is also so mounted thatthe wringer shaft, 8, is outside of the line of the tub and it extends upwardly along one side of the tub of the washing machine to the wringer head. r
My apparatus is designed primarily to be driven by an electric motor, 16, but may be driven by any other suitable means. A belt wheel, 13, is mounted upon the free end of the drive shaft, 10, which is mounted in suitable bearings, 11, and 11 formed integral with the housing, 1. A crank pin, 32, is suitably secured in the bevel gear, 31, and has one end of the rack, 28, pivotally mounted thereon. The opposite end of the rack, 28, is provided with a series of teeth corresponding tothe teeth in the spur gear, 29, mounted upon the lower end of the washer shaft, 7 and within the housing, 1, the housing, 1, to be provided with bosses or enlargements, 5 and 6, to form; suitable mountings for the shafts, 8 and 7, respectively. V
The rack, 28, is held in mesh with the spur gear, 29, by'the larger end of the head of the cam, 25. The cam, 25, operates to hold the rack, 28, into, mesh with. thespur gear, 29, when inone position and to permit the rackto be drawn away from the spur gear by the spring, 33, when in another position. The cam, 25, is formed integral with a flange, 27, separated from the head by a deep groove, 26, in. which the head, 21, of the rocker lever,,19, is mounted. The rocker lever, 19, is pivoted upon the pivot, 20, secured ina boss, 4,-of the housing, 1. The rocker lever, 19, is secured to the lower end of the shift rod, 18, by washers, 21 and 22, and cotter keys, 23 and 24. and the upper end of the shift rod, 18, is provided with a handle, 18, which is adapted to project outwardly through the washing machine housing so that it can be manually raised or lowered to shift the cam-, 25,' and throw the rack, '28-, and spur gear, 29, out of and into mesh, it being understod that the rack, 28, is drawn out of mesh by the spring, 33, one end of which is secured to the rack, 28, and the opposite end of which is secured to a bolt, 34, which passes through the outer end of :1 lateral extension, 3, of the housing, 1, and is held in place by a nut, 35, upon the inner end of the bolt, 34;. An opening, 17, is provided in the top of the housing, 1, through which the shift rod, 18, passes.
In the operation of my device, the apparatus is mounted within the base of the washing machine with the shaft, 7,'projecting into the tub of the ushing machine and connect ed with the dolly or other stirrer and the wringer shaft, 8, is connected to the wringer in any of the usual ways. V
The shift lever handle, 18, is then pressed downward which raises the cam, 25, and per mits the spring, 33, to draw the rackbar out of engagement with the spur gear, 29. The
motor, 16, is then started and through. the belt, drives the belt wheel, 13, and with 1t the main shaft, 10, p1n1on, 30, and bevel gear, 9- i- 1. .1 a 01, thus putting in motion {.18 nrmgei s a1 The shift rod handle, 18*, is then drawn up forcing the cam, 25, downwardly so that the larger portion of its head forces the rack, 28,
into engagement with the spur gear, 29, which drives the washer dolly or stirrer through the shaft, 7.
The rotary motion of the shaft, 8, is continuous in one direction, but the rackbar, 28, causes the spur gear, 29, to rotate alternately in opposite directions.
The pinion, 30, hevel'gear, 31, and spur "gear, 29, are so proportioned as to give the desired speed for the shafts, 8 and 7 in proportion to the speed of the motor, 16.
An oil hole, 1 is provided in the housing, 1, through which oil may be poured to fill the housing, 1, to the desired height and the oil 'hole'may be closed by a screw plug, 1 or other suitable means.
I claim: 1. A combined driving mechanism for a washer and 'wringer comprising a tub, a housing, a drive shaft mounted thereon having one end extending into the housing and fitted with. a pinion, a bevel gear mounted within the housing in mesh with the pinion, a crank pin united to the bevel gear, a vertical 1 drive shaft mounted in the housing and; ex-
tending into the tub of thewasher, a" spur gear mounted within the housing upon the lower end of the vertical drive shaft, a raekbar having one end pivotally mounted upon the crank pin and its opposite end mounted adjacent the spur gear, a tension spring having one end connected to the rackbar and its v opposite end secured to the housing and adapted to normally hold therackbar out of engagement with the spur gear, a cam mount- ()(l'lfl the housing ad acent the toothed end or the rackhar and having a curved face adapted to force the rackbar into engagement with the spur gear when in one position and to permit the rackbar to be drawn away from the spur gear when'in its opposite posi tion, a manually operable shift lever extending upwardly through thehousing, a rocking lever pivoted within the housing having upon one end a head adapted to engage and operate the cam, and itsopposite end united to the lower end of the manually operable shift lever. In a driving mechanism for washing machines, a housing, a shaft mounted therein and having a gear wheel mounted upon the end thereof, a crank pin united to the gear wheel, a rack-bar having one end pivotally mounted upon the crank pin, a pinion and shaft mounted in the housing adjacent the toothed portion of the rack-bar, a spring connected to the rack-bar and the housing adapted to hold the rack-bar out of engagein a plane at right angles to the plane of movement of the rack-bar, and adapted to hold the rack-bar in engagement with the" p1n1on when in one position and to permit it to be drawn away from the pinion when in its opposite position. v l

In a driving mechanism for washing machines, a housing, a shaft mounted therein and having a gear wheel mounted upon the end thereof, a crank pin united to the gear wheel, a rack-bar having one end pivotally mounted upon the crank pin, apinion and shaft mounted in the housing adjacent the toothed'portion of the rack-bar, a spring connected to the rack-bar and the housing adapted to hold the raekdoar out ofengagement with its acent pinion and a tapered cam having an inclined face mounted adjacent the rack-bar opposite the pinion and slidable in a plane at right angles to the plane of movement of the raclnbar, and adapted to hold the rack-bar in engagement with the p1n1on when 111 one position and to permit it to be drawn away from the pinion'when in its opposite position, and manually opermachines, a housing, a shaft mounted therein and having a gear wheel mounted'upon the end thereof, a crank pin united to the gear wheel, a rack-bar having one end pivotally mounted upon the crank pin, a' pinion and shaft mounted in' the housing adjacent the toothedportion of the rack bar, a spring con nected to the rack-bar and the housing adapted'to hold the rack-bar out of engagement with its adjacent pinion, a tapered cam having an inclined face mounted adjacent the rack-baro'pposite the p1n1on and slidable in a plane at right angles to the plane of movement of the raok-bar, and adapted to hold the raclebar in engagement with the pinion mounted Within the housing having one end embracing the cam and its opposite end linked to a handle by which same may be manually operated.
