UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
AAGE RASMUSSEN, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
MECHANICAL MOVEMENT.
Application filed June 15, 1925. Serial No. 37,170.
T all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, AAGE Rasmussen,
State of .lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Movements; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof. I
This invention relates to a mechanical movement, and is particularly directed to a mechanical movement designed for cooperation with a winding mechanism.
Objects of this invention are toprovide a mechanical movement in which rocking or reciprocatorymotion is changed into rotary motion in such a manner'that an impulse is transmitted to the rotary shaftirrespective of the direction of reciprocation of the operating member, and to provide a simple and effective type of mechanism for accomplishing this function.
Further objects are to provide a mechanical movement which occupies a small amount of space, which will effect the winding of a. spring or similar member without requiring the use of a crank, which may be combined with a cabinet structure in a manner to economize space and avoid the outward projection of a crank, and which is of attractive and pleasing appearance, and does not mar the appearance of a cabinet to which it is attached.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 shows the device applied to a phonograph, such figure being a vertical elevation partly in section.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 33 of Figure 2.
Figure 41 is a sectional view showing a ratchet.
Figure 5 is a detail partly in section on the line 55 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawings, particularly Figure 1, it will be seen that the device is shown as applied to the ordinary spring motor of a phonograph. The spring mechanism is indicated. at 1 and its winding shaft at 2. This winding shaft 2 carries a bevel gear 3 and a smaller bevel gear 4, both of which are rigidly secured to the shaft 2. A
A vertical shaft? extends upwardly in front of the shaft 2, as shown most clearly in Figures 1, 3 and 5. ilhisvertical shaft is carried in an upper and alower bearing 8 and 9, respectively. ,A bevel gear 10 is rigidly secured to the shaft 7 and a small hexagonal member ,11 is also rigidly secured to such shaft adjacent its upper end, and is provided with a flange 12. This hexagonalinember receives a ratchet wheel 13 which is apertured-to.conform to the hexagonal contour of the member 11, as most clearly indicated in Figure 2.
The ratchet wheel .13 isprovided with an outwardly projecting; portion l upon which the ratchet teeth are formed andis provided with a pair of nwardly positioned shoulders which form projecting hubs 15. {These projecting hubs pivotally reeeiveithe apertured portion of a pair ofstrap members or plates 16 and 17 as most clearlyshownin Figure 8, one ofthe members, foriinstance, 17 continuing, outwardly to form an operat; ing arm or lever 18. Thearn 18-is,there fore, carried by means of'the hubs of the ratchet wheel 13 and is free to oscillate about such hubs. A small pawl 19 is carried between the members 16 and 17 and is urged inwardly by means of a spring clamped between such members, as shown in Figures 3 and 4, such spring being indicated by the reference character 20. Obviously, it is usually desirable to provide a slight channel or groove in the members 16 and 1'? to receive the outwardly projecting end of this spring.
A bevel gear 21 is freely mounted upon the shaft 7 and is provided with a downwardly extending spacing sleeve 22 which rests upon the disc portion of the bevel gear 10, as shown in Figure 3, and consequently correctly positions the gear 21, such gear meshing with the bevel gear 3. This gear 21 is further provided with a shouldered hub 23 which carries a ratchet wheel 24 simi lar to the ratchet wheel 13. A similar pair of arms are provided which engage the hub of the ratchet wheel 2%, one of such 1 H arms projecting outwardly, as indicated at 25.
A spring pressed pawl 26, similar to the pawl 19 is provided and cooperates with the ratchet wheel 24.
It is to be noted that the ratchet wheels 13 and 24 have their teeth oppositely turned, and the pawls 19 and 26 are correspondingly positioned. The arms 18 and project outwardly and are bolted together by means of a threaded rod 27, a spacer being positioned between the arms 18 and 25. This pin or arm 27 projects upwardly through a slot 28 formed in the top 29 of the cabinet such, for instance, as the cabinet of a phonograph. If desired,- a plate 30 may be secured to the upper side of the phonograph and may be provided with a correspondingly arcuate slot 31 through which the pin 27 projects. A handle 32 is rigidly secured to the upper end of the pin above the plate 30.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows :-lVhen it is desired to wind the mechanism, the operator grasps the handle 32 and rocks it back and forth in the arcuate slot 31. Motion is transmitted first to the gear 10 and then to the gear 21 in a reverse direction, such gears rotating the corresponding gears 4 and 3, and consequently rotating the shaft 2 at each reciprocation. Thus the mechanism may be very quickly and easily wound up and does not require an outwardly projecting crank which detracts from the appearance of the machine and also is very likely to damage due to its exposed position.
It is to be understood that the handle 32 is completely housed by the ordinary cover of the phonograph.
It will be seen that a very simple type of mechanical movement has been provided in which reciprocatory or rocking motion is Although the invention has been described in considerable detail, it is to be understood that the invention may be variously embodied and is, therefore, to be limited only as claimed.
I claim:
A mechanical movement comprising a base member and a top member having sockets rigidly carried thereby, a vertical shaft extending between said sockets, a bevel gear rigidly secured to said shaft adjacent its lower end, a second bevel gear spaced therefrom and having an integral downwardly extending sleeve resting upon said first mentioned bevel gear to hold said bevel gears in spaced relation, a pair of rocking levers, pawl mechanisms operating in opposite directions and joining said levers with said shaft and with said last mentioned bevel gear, a frame work having vertical side members extending upwardly from said base and having a transverse member, a horizontal shaft having an end journaled in said transverse member, and a pair of bevel gears carried by said horizontal shaft and meshing with said first mentioned bevel gears.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Wisconsin.
AAGE RASMUSSEN.
