i UNITED STATES PATENT oF-FicE.
GEORGE HONEY, or CANUCK, SASKATGHEWAN, CANADA.
BELT-LACING TOOL.
Application filed January 8, 1926; Serial No. 79,975.
My invention relates to a new and useful improvement. in a belt-lacing tool, and has i for its object the provision of a belt -laclng tool which may be used for punching holes 111 5 the leather of the belt andalso for reaming out the punched holes to the proper size for the reception of the lace. Another object of the invention is the 'provision of a belt-lacing tool made from a single piece of metal and having a holding portion a reaming port-ion, theseportions projecting fromthe holding portion so as not to he in alinement with each other, thus permitting the use of a driving member against the holding portion to direct either of the tools into the work piece or leather operated upon when necessary. g
Another object of the invention 1s the pro- 20 vision of a tool of this class which will be simple in structure, economical of manufac- Fig. 2 is a sectional viewtaken on substan tially line 2-2 ofFig. l, and
a5 Fi 3 is a sectional vie'wtaken on sub-' 'stantially line 3- -3 of Fig.1.
As shown in thedrawings the invention comprises a tool formed from a single piece of metal, preferably cylindrical and so arranged as to provide a circular holding portion 8, the ends of the metal overlapping to provide the adjacent portions 9 and 10. One of theends of the.metal is projected outwardly, preferably diametrically, from the holding portion 8,.thislend 11 being tapered to a point at the free end 12, and swaged'to provide this outwardly projectingportion with an arcuate formation having the concave side 13 and the e'nds l l and 15 of this arcuate portion being sharpened so as to provide cutting edges for reaming .the hole from which project a punching portion and part of this specification andpunched in the belt. The opposite end also project-s outwardly, diametrically, from the holding portion, and preferably at" right angles to the line of projectionof the end 11. This end 16 is formed circular in crosssection and reduced toward its end to provide a point 17, this end being used for a punch or as an awl for punching holes in the leather 'so that the reaming end may be easily inserted into the leather.
At the present time theoperator in lacing a belt is provided with an awl and a reaming tool which are separate. This necessitates the operator laying one tool down after use before using the other tool, with a consequent loss of time. :It is also believed that the pres-' ent device, embodying the two tools, may be manufactured more cheaply than the two separate tools, inasmuch as the separate awl and reamer are each provided with a suitable 1 handle. j By providing the holding portion 8 in the manner describeda sufficient surface is'pre-v sented for the operator to graspthe device and operate it by hand. When desired the hand-hold may be struck with a hammer or other device to force the awl or reamer into the leather. By projecting the ends from the.
holding portion diametrically a direct blow maybe struck on the holding portion directly in line with the tool to-be driven. By directing these ends diametrically at right angles to each other the possibility of distorting the holding portion is lessened as the striking on the holding portion. for driving one tool is offset by the drivingrequired to forc the,
othertool intothe leather.
While Ihave illustrated and described the preferred form of structure, I do not wish to limit myself tothe precise details of structure set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: r
1. A belt-lacing tool of the described,
comprising a single piece of metal having the main body doubledupon itself into circular form'to provide a holding portion, the ends of said metal being projected outwardly from said holding portion diametrically thereof the ends projecting diametrically outwardly o and at right angles to each other, one of said therefrom at substantially right angles to ends being formed into a tool tapered toward eaehotlier, each of said ends being tapered to- 10 its end and concave in cross-section. Ward its end. y 5 2. An article of manufacture, comprising In testimony whereof I have signed the a single piece of wire having themain body foregoing specification.
coiled upon itself into a eircular form and GEORGE HONEY.
