Description

Patented Sept. 11, 1928.`
UNITED) STATESl PATENT OFFICE.
PETER. BROWN, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, AssIGNvoR To o-cEDAR COEPN, 'A CORPORA- i Y TIoN or ILLINOIS. x
f Mor HEAD.
npplieation mea march 2,1, 1927. serial no. 176,947.
This invention relates to almop head of thetype wherein the vmop stock in strip form is adapted to be secured to a supporting metal strip or band. l Y' i It is an object of this invention to provide a Vmop head of this type which may be made in a, simple and inexpensive manner, and' which is adapted to the purposes 0f large scale production.
Other and further important objects and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the` following description of an illustrated embodiment of the present invention.
On the drawings: l p
Figure 1 is a topplan View of a lnished `mop head embodymg the principles of my invention; y. y y A.
Figure 2 is a top plan View of an unformed `mop head showing the forming operation indotted lines.
I Figure 3 is a fragmentary elevational view of Figure 2, and i I Figure 4 is a sectional View taken parallel to the plane of the mop head.
As shown onl the drawings:
The reference numeral 1 indicates a supporting band, preferably formedl of a relativelysoft metal. In the operation of preparing the metal strip to serve as a supporting band for a mop swatch 2, tongues or prongs 3 are struck` up fromthe bandll at predetermined spaced intervals. Said tongues 3 serve to engage the band 4 of themop swatch 2 and also provide slots 5. Said slots 5 are so positioned-as to locate "the,
vertices of the triangular ring into which the band 'l is subsequently formed, the wea-kening of the metal band caused by the slots being sufficient to cause the band to bend naturally at those points, (Figure 2.). The ends of the band l are bent at right angles thereto as shown at 6 and 7.
While the band l is still in straight form, the mop swatch 2 which is produced in the form of strips, islaid over said band l and the tongues 3' inserted through the hem or band 4 of the mop stock. The tongues 4 are large scale operation.
strip being bent into al triangle then bent overlagainst the hem of the mop stock to lie parallel to the band l.
case of the tongues It should be notedin the located at the vertices of the triangular ring, that said tongues are bent away from the 4slot 5 instead ofover said slots, otherwise `the tongues themselves wo ld have tobe separately bent during the subsequent bending operation to form Athe triangular ring.
When the hand l is in ring form, the ends 6 and 7 liein abutting relation and are adapted to be secured together and to a socket 8 by means of a. bolt 9 passing through the ends thereof. .A handle l0 may or otherwise secured in the socket 8.
It will be appreciated that a mop head such as above described may be made by a few simple mechanical operations, and that therefore the cost of production is considerably less than in the case of mop-headspreviouslyv made by more elaborate also be noted that the various operations in the making of the'mop headsare such as admit of quantity production, with the consequent saving that may be realized by a I am aware that many changes may be made and numerous details of the construcmethods. It should 6o be threaded tion may be varied through a wide range without departing from the principles of this Y invention, and I therefore do not purpose limiting the patent granted hereon, otherwise than necessitated by the prior art and the appended claim.
I claim as myinvention :l 4 A mop head comprising a metal strip havf ing `ends bent at right angles thereto, said with said ends abutting 'each other, teeth struck out from said strip forming slots 'for defining the position `of the vertices of the triangle yand a mop fabric adapted to be engaged by said teeth and to be secured to said strip by being hooked over said teeth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto sub- PETER BROWN.
scribed my name.
