Description
W. DIPPERT.
} Harness-Pad Press.
N0 168,381 Patented Oct. 5,1875.
N PETERS, FHOTO-LITHOQRAPMER, WASHINGTON, D 2v UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
WILLIAM DIPPERT, OF DES MOINES, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-PAD PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,381, dated October 5, 1875 application filed May 31, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM DIPPERT, of Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of Iowa, have invented an Improved Harness- Pad Press, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to furnish a simple press adapted to form two pads simultaneously in one operation. It consists in arranging two pad-forms, and two hinged crimping-rims, and a screw-press relative to eachother upon a base-plate, as hereinafter fully set forth.
My drawing is aperspective view, illustrating the construction and operation of my in- Vention.
ac is an oblong cast-metal plate secured with screws, or in any suitable way, to a movresponding in shape with the forms Nos. 1 and 2, over which they are designed to pass. They are hinged to the ears 0 projecting from the plate a a. f is a screw fixed in a central position relative to the forms Nos. 1 and 2. It may be secured to the plate a a in any suitable way. 9 is a pressing device that slides upon the screw f, and extends laterally to engage the front ends of the hinged rims d. h is a nut on the screw f, designed to move and operate the pressing device g. m represents a piece of leather placed over the form N o. 1, and clamped and crimped by the rim (1, and illustrates the manner of operating my invention to shape leather into the form of a pad. By placing a piece of leather over each form, Nos. 1 and 2, and then adjusting the hinged rims d and the pressing device g so as to engage both rims, the operation of the nut h will force the press 9 upon the rims and the rims (1 will crimp the leathers m over the forms Nos. 1 and 2, and thus simultaneously form two pads at one operation.
I am aware that an apparatus has been constructed by means of which the two parts of a pad may be simultaneously cut by operating a press in the center, and the pad then pressed into dies by hinged followers but I claim that my combination in which two hinged crimping-rims simultaneously engage the leathers, and stretch and crimp them over two forms, produces an improved harness-makers implement.
I claim as my invention- In a harness-pad press, the combination of the forms 1 and 2, the hinged rims d d, and the screw-press f g h, adapted to depress and hold the rims, all substantially as and for the purposes described.
WILLIAM DIPPERT.
