' iimvIcE non HANDLING "oomnn 1 *Apilication flled iz l'une '30,
a This invention relates to r adevice for handling containers; and' it is an ob eet ot the invention to provide device ot jG-hlS kind constructed in amanner wherebyyit may be readily applied to a container in a manner permitting lifting and other "handling oi the coirtainer and more especially when under load." a 1 :The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of" the :several; parts oi my improved whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient-and-advantageous for use, as will be hereinafter more--fu1ly setforth.
i The novel features: ofmyinventmn will hereinafter-be definitely claimed. I H
In ordfer tlfat my "invention may be the better understood, '1 will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the ac- Y companying drawing, wherein Figure 1 1s a view intop plan illustrating a handling device constructed in accordance with. an embodiment of my invention in applied position; V
Figure 2 1s a viewin side elevation of the 1 structure as illustrated in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is-also a View in side elevation of the structure shown in Figure '1 but sub stantially on a quarter turn with respect to Figure 2';
Figure 4 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly in section and partly 1n elevation 11- lustrating in detail a connection between the weight carrying member and upper clamps asherein embodied.
Figure 5 is a View in plan of the handle member unapplied.
As herein disclosed, my improved handling device comprises the weight carrying 1 member M substantially U-shaped in form and including an intermediate or base mem her 1 upon which a container G is directly rested, said member 1 being disposed preferably radially under the bottom of the container C. The member M also comprises the side members 2 extending upwardly along opposite sides of the container C and terminating at their upper or free extremit-ies into laterally disposed rebent flanges or lugs 3. a I
Disposed from above through each of the flanges 0r lugs 3 is an elongated headed member or bolt 4 and threaded upon said lug 3.
device for] handling containers 1927." Serial No.3 202,639;
member ;or "bolt, 4 is-a nut S adapted to have contact from below withthe' flange or :The; member or bolt its also disposed through the central portion o'f-a substantially x-U shaped bracket rrB which engages from below withithe'head 6 of the member .orbolt L I v i The side members 7 of the brackets-Bare provided with the openings 8 through which is directed an elongated bolt-9. marginal":portions otthe side'members 7 of the bracketB engage'w'ithin the threads of .the bolt 9,,as illustrated in Figure 4, where,- by said bracket B is effectively held against shifting movement lengthwisemof ;theobolt.'
. This bolt 9is also disposed through out standing ears 10: carred'by the; adj acent; end portions -/ot :the clamping, members '11. These clamping members 11 engage-the up per portions of a container C at opposite sides thereof and are directed circumferentially around the container. I
Eachoi' the bolts 9 has threaded upon an end portion thereof a nut 12 engaging an ear l0 from without while the head 11 of the bolt engages from without the adjacent ear 10so that upon requisite turning movement of. the nut 12, the clamping members 11 are brought into proper engagement with the upper portion of the container C.
The upper Coacting with each of the bolts 9 is a 'handle member or hand graspH, the same being" substantially U-shaped in form with its side members 15 adjacent their free extremities 7 bracket B and contacting with the adjacent cars 10 from within.
As illustrated in Figure 5, the free end i portions of the handle member or hand grasp vH. are initially arranged in divergence and as the nut 12 of a bolt 9 with which said member H is engaged is tightened, said member H will be maintained normally in a substantially fixed position and preferably on the angle indicated in Figure 2. n j
My improved handling deviceis intended for use withcrocks, pots, kegs, jars andany other type of container and provides means whereby the container to which the device is applied may be readily lifted andotherwise handled with convenience and facility; .In
. handling kegs in the ordinary manner it is 10 thoughtto be obvious that a device for well known there is always a liability of splinters entering the hands and in the conventional manner -of handling glass jars, crooks and the like there is always the possibility of the hands slippingand more par:
ticularly when such container is under load; ll 1th the use of my improved device these.
disadvantages are overcome.
From theforegoing description it is handling containers constructed in accordance with my invention is particnlarly'well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvioiis'that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without departing from prising aineinber adapted to straddle a container front below clamn members coa cting with opposite sides of the upper portion 1,683,772 1 y i i of the container, bolts'coeoperating with the extremities of the clampmembers to bring the same into requisite engagement with the container, bolts engaged with the free extremities of the first named member, means for connecting said second named bolts with the first named bolts, and a handle member engaged with each of the second named bolts.
- 2. A device for handling containerscomprising a member adapted to straddle a containerfrom below, clamp men'xbers enacting with opposite sides of the upper portion of the container, bolts co-operating with the extremities of the clamp vmeml'qers to bring the same into requisite engagement with the container, bolts engaged with the. free ex tremities of thefirst named member. means for connecting said second named boltswith the firstnalned bolts, and a handle member,
engaged with each of the second named bolts, each of said means comprising a U-shapcd bracket having one otthe first named bolts disposed through its extremities, a second named bolt being, directed from above through the central portion of the bracket.
In testimony whereof I hereunto am; my
signature. I
