Description

July 25, 1939. `H. MILLIGAN lcs cnam CAN HOLDER, LIFTER, AND scRAPER Filed sept. 24, 1937' ftnrneys Patented July 25, 1939 yUNITED STATES ICE CREAM CAN HOLDER, LIFTER, AND SCRAPER Herschel L. Milligan, Nashville, Tenn., assignor of one-half to .lames B. Cook, Nashville, Tenn.
Application September 24, 1937, Serial N0. 165,602
1 Claim.
'Ihis invention relates to a device for holding an ice cream can and facilitates lifting the can, and for scraping surplus ice cream from the dipper, the general object of the invention being to provide a base, uprights and means for engaging the upper part of the can and a wire stretched across the upper portion of the device for acting as a scraper.
Another ob-ject of th/e invention is to provide l0 a clip for gripping an upper portion of the can to prevent it from turning while filling a dipper therefrom and also to make the device adjustable as to length.
'I'his invention also consists in certain other v features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of several parts, to be herein-` after fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically pointed out in the appended claim. The drawing shows a perspective view of the device.
In this drawing the numeral I indicates the base of the device and is preferably formed of a flat ring of metal with turned up and inwardly curved ears 2 on its periphery for engaging the bead at the bottom of a can. A pair of flat bars 3 have their lower ends bent under the base and riveted or otherwise fastened thereto and each bar has a longitudinally extending slot 4 therein. A flat bar 5 engages the inner face of each of the bars 3 and each pair of the bars 3 and 5 are slidably connected together by the -channel iron clip 6 which is fastened to the bar 5 by a bolt 'l which passes through the slot 4. A substantially semi-circular collar 8 has its ends connected to the upper ends of the bars 5 with the collar projecting above the upper ends of said bars.
A spring clip 9 of inverted U-shape has one limb connected to the collar and this clip is adapted to engage a portion of the upper edge of an ice cream can A, shown in dotted lines. An inwardly extending lug l0 is formed on the top of the collar at each end thereof, and each lug has a threaded hole therein for receiving a screw I l and each lug is provided with the groove I2 fo-r receiving an end part of the wire I3, the ends of said wire being held in place by the screws Il. This Wire is heldy taut and extends across the collar and acts as a scraper for removing surplus cream from a dipper after the clipper has been filled from the contents of the can.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the de- 5 vice can be adjusted as to its length so that it can be used for cans of differentheights and that when a can is seated on the base with a portion of its upper edge engaged by the clip 9 the can can be readily lifted from an ice cream cabinet or the l0 like and placed in the cabinet and the device will prevent the can from turning when the dipper is being used to remove some of the contents thereof and the wire can be used for removing surplus cream from the clipper. By loosening the screws 15 or bolts 'l the collar can be raised or lowered to suit the particular can which is to be used with the device and then the screws are tightened to hold the parts in adjusted position. The upwardly and inwardly curved lugs 2 on the base 20 will act to lock the bottom part of a can to the base when the can is provided with a bottom bead and the inwardly extending lugs l0 engage parts of the upper end of the can or container so that these lugs help to hold the can in the device. 25
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of the invention will be readily apparent.
It is to be understood that changes may be made in the construction and in the combina- 30 tion and arrangement o-f the several parts, provided, that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is: 35
A container holder comprising a fiat base part, forming a seat for a container, a pair of uprights connected at their lower ends to edge portions of the base part, a substantially semi-circular collar connected to the upper ends of said uprights, in- 40 wardly extending lugs connected with the top of the collar at the ends thereof and adapted to engage top portions of a container, each lastmentioned lug having a slit therein, a wire having its ends passing through the slits, and means 45 for holding the ends of the wire in said slits with the wire extending taut between the lugs.
