G. H. CONNERS ADVERTI S ING APPARATUS Filed Dec. 15, 1927 Patented Sept. 11 1928.
UNITED STATES ADVERTISING- AEEARATUS.
Application filed December 13, 1927. Serial No. 239,674,
This invention relates to an apparatus which is more particularly designed for billboard and sign advertising.
Ci. he object of the invention is to provide a simple apparatus which maybe readily attached to a billboard or sign that carries advertising matter in whicii' the representation of the emission of smoke is'a feature to be depicted for producing the smoke.
This object is attained in the present instance by attaching a chamber containing an electrically heated. resistance or hot-plate to the back the billboard or sign and leading a pipe from the chamber to an opening in the billboard or sign at the locality where it is desired that smoke shall beemitted, a pipe from a reservoir or cup containing oil being led into the chamber over the hot plate or resistance so that oil may be dropped therefrom onto and be vaporized by the resistance or hot plate that is connected in a circuit which is closed by an electrically operated time switch that is also arranged to control the discharge outlet from the oil reservoir or cup, whereby the time switch may be set to simultaneously cause the resistance or hot plate to become heated and the oil to drop thereon, at a definitetime for a predetermined period, and then 'coincidently shut off the current from the resistance or hot plate and stop the flow of oil. 7 p
In the accompanying drawings Fig. 1 1s a representation of a billboard provided with an apparatus that embodies this invention. F 1g. 2 is a view of the apparatus on larger scale and with parts in section.
The chamber 1 may be attached to the back I of the billboard 2 by any suitable means and the pipe 3 is led from the top ofthe chamber to the locality where the smoke is to issue, which in the case illustrated is represented as thebowl of a smoking pipe l. llear the bottom of the chamber openings 5 are made to permit the entrance of the necessary amount of air to promote vaporization of the constituents ot the oil that are to make the smoke, and to ensure the necessary upward draught of heated air which will tarry the smoke to the outlet up on the billboard. Fastened to but insulated nected with this plate by binding screws 8 are wires 9 and 10 that lead from a time switch 11. This switch may be any of the common well known types or electrically operated switches such as are used for street lighting, isigns, billboards, and store windows for automatically turning on and off current at predetermined times.
Extending on an incline into the chamber and having its lowe'rend opening abovethe cup 7 a tube 12. "The upper end of this tube is attached to the outlet end of an oil reserv'oi-ror'cup 13 of commonconstruction. The switch spindle 14 of the time switch FATE-NT orri'cs.
is extended throughthe switch casing and on theend of this spindle and fastened to it so as, to turn with the swltch in the usual manner is a cam 15. The oil 'cup is located adjacent to the time switch in such position that this cam engages the head of the valve spindle 1601 the oil cup and forces the valve spindle down when the cam is turned to one position and allows thevalve rod to be raised by the spring 17 when the cam is turned over as the switch is thrown.
By the apparatus described, according to the setting of the time switch, thecircuit to the hot plate is closed and opened and coincidently the outlet valve of theoil cup is opened and closed so that oil will trickle down the tube and drop onto the heated hot plate, which action continues until the setting of the time switch turns off the current and closes the oil cup valve. When oil drops in this manner upon the hot plate smoky vapor is produced and this smoke is carried up by the' draught caused by the heated air, through the pipe to the outlet on the billboard or sign where it issues with chamber having an outlet adapted to open throughthe sign, electrically heated means in said chamber, an oil receptacle with its discharge leading into the chamber above said electrically heated means, and a time switch, said time switch having means Which coincidently controls anelectric circuit that i 7 includes the electrically heated means withinthe chamber and the discharge from the oil receptacle.
, 2. An apparatus for use in, connection with advertising signs whicheomprises a chamber having an outlet pipe adapted to be extended to an opening through the sign,
electrically heated means in said chamber,
anoili receptacle having a discharge pipe leading on an incline into the chamber above said electrically heated means, and a time switch, said time switch having ,mcansf which coincidently controls an electric circuit that includes the electrically heated means within the chamber and the discharge from the oil receptacle.
3. An apparatus for use in connection with advertising signs which comprises a chamber having air intake openings near its lower end and an outlet pipe extending upward to an opening in the sign, electrically heated means in the lower part of said chamher, an oil receptacle having a discharge pi as leading on an incline into the chamber above said electrically heated means, anda time switch, said time switch having means which colncidently controls an electric circuit that includes the electrically heated means within the chamber and the discharge from the oil receptacle.
4. An apparatus for use in connection -with advertising signs which comprises a chamber having an outlet adapted to open through the sign, electrically heated means in said chamber, an oil receptacle with its discharge leading into the chamber above said electrically heated means, and a time switch, said time switch having a' switch which controls anelectric circuit that includes the electrically heated means within the chamber and having a cam which controls the discharge from the oil receptacle, said controlling means operating coincidentally.
5. The combination with an advertising sign of a chamber attached to the sign and having an outlet adapted to open through the sign, electrically heated means in said chamber, an oil receptacle adjacent to said .cl'ian'iber and having its discharge leading on an incline into the chamber above said electrically heated means, and a time switch, said time switch having means which coincidently controls an electric circuit that includes the electrically heated means within the chamber and the discharge from the oil receptacle GEORGE n.
