This invention relates to upsetting devices a and more particularly to upsetting devices particularly adapted for upsetting the ends of tubular articles, such as pipe, and hasfor I its object the provision of a novel combina-. tion ofiipparatus for upsetting the ends of pipe,whereby the pipe is held intermediate its ends durmg the upsetting operation,- so that random length pifpes may be upset with- .0 out any adjustment 0 the apiparatus.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, the letter A esignates a heating fur nace for heating the ends ofthe pipe B to be upset, which pi are supported on bed rails C; The pipe are adapted to be rolled I from the bed G onto a jack-stand D and to be upset b aforging machine E of standard design, w 'ch is provided with two pairs of co-ac matrix and patrix u setting'dies 2 and 3, and 4 and 5 respective y, the pairs ll. of dies'being spaced vertically.
1 The jack stand D is of standard and wellknown construction and is provided with jack-rollers 6 and 7 adapted to support the ipe to be upset, and to be raised and lowlc ered by a fluid pressure cylinder 8 to position the pipe in the proper plane to be acted .npon by thep 'rs of dies'2,8'and 4,5. The paratus so far described is'wellknown and commonly used in the ar't'and will not be further described in detail. v
Heretofore a back-stop has been employed at the end of the jack-stand to back up the pipe being upset and prevent endwise movement of t tion. When a back-stop is used t e pipe must all be of exactly the same len h, or else e pipe during the upsettingioperathe back-stop must be adjusted or all the different length of pipe, this operation requiring the use of an extra operator, and
causing delay in the u setting operation until the back-stop was a usted.
Thepresent inventon eliminates the use of a back-stop and provides means for holding the p pe intermediate, its ends, so that any length pipe maybe upset, and the use of an extra 0 erator is eliminatedsince the novel pipe h o ding ap aratus of this invention is readily operable y the forging or upsetting machine operator.

A pairoi bottom wedgelates 13a'ndf-14 are secured n the bottom w of the window 12 and are provided with wedge-tongues 15. A pair of wedge-blocks '16 and 17 are mounted on the plates 13 and 14, respectively and provided with wedge-grooves 18 adapted to receive the tongues 15. A second pair of.
wedge-plates 19- and 20 are secured to the upper ends of the side walls of the housing 9 and extend over the window 12. vThe plates 19 and'20 are each provided with wedgetongues 21 ada ted to fit-in wedge-grooves 22 in the top aces ofthe wedge- blocks 16 and 17. j

The wedge- blocks 16 and 17 are provided with die-blocks or article engaging jaws 24 and 25 r ctively, on their inner faces which are secured totheblocks by bolts-26.
The jaws 24 and 25 are each provided with a pair of vertically spaced grooves 27 and 28 adapted to aline with the pipe to be upset in its upper and lower positions, respective- 11 The grooves 27 and 28 are of less depth t an half the diameter of the pipe, so that the jaws may be moved toward each other sufficiently to tightly grip the pipe in the jaws 24 and 25.
The wedge- blocks 16 and 17 are adapted to be reciprocated by a fluid pressure c linder 29 through a suitable link and ever mechanism to be described.
A shaft 30 is journaled in suitable bearings 31 on the rear of the housing 9 and carries levers 32 and 33 which are connected by a series of links 34, 35, 36 and 37, 38 and 39 respectively, to pivot pins 40 and 41 mounted in the respective blocks 16 and 17.
The shaft 30 is provided with a rockin lever 42 which is connected by a link 43 wit the piston rod 44 of the cylinder 29.
In operation, the pipe B is movedonto the jack-stand D and the jack-rollers 6 and 7 are lowered to move the pipe into position for upsetting by the dies 2 and 3. The cylinder 29 is then actuated to rock the shaft 30 and thereb move thewedge-blocks 16 and a 17 forwar y which, due to the co-acting tongues 18 and 22 and ooves 15 and 21, will be forced toward eac other to gri the pipe in the ooves 27 in jaws 24 an 25. The grip of t e jaws 24 and 25 will be sufiicient to hold the pipe against endwise movement during the upsetting operation, but will permit the ipe to slip if the upsetting or forging strolib is excessive.
After the end ofthe pipe B has thus been upset, the cylinder 29 is operated to release the jaws 24 and .25 and the jack-rollers 6 and 7 are raised to elevate the pipe into position for the second upsetting and roundingup operation by the dies 4 and 5. The cylinder is again operated to close the jaws 24 and 25 and gri the pipe in the grooves 28 so as to hold the pipe against endwise movement during this second upsetting and rounding-up operation.
After the second upsetting and roundingup operation is completed the jaws 24 and 25 are again released and the pipe removed.
It will be readily appreciated that I have provided an upsetting ap aratus capable of u setting random pipes without 0 ange or adjustment and, therefore, the
employment of an operator for manipulatin theIback-stop ordinarily used is dispensed wit 1.
While I have shown and described one specific embodiment of my invention it will be understood that I do not wish to be limited thereto since various modifications may be made without departing from the scope of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In an apparatus for upsetting tubular articles, a housing having a window therein, a pair of wedge-plates secured on the bottom 'wall of said window, upstanding wedgetongues on said plates, a pair of wedge-blocks mounted on said wedge-plates and rovided with wedge-grooves to receive sai wedgetongues, a second pair of wedge-plates secuicd to said housing and overlying'said wedge-blocks, said last named plates being provided with downwardly extending wedge-tongues adapted to be enga d in wedge-slots in said wedge-blocks artlcle engaging jaws secured to the inner tacos of said wedge-blocks, and power means for reciprocating said wedge-blocks relative to said wedge-plates to move said article engaging jaws toward and away from each other so as to grip and release the articles to be upset.
2. In an apparatus for upsetting tubular articles, a housing having a window therein, a pair of wedge-p ates securedon-the bottom wall of said wlndow, upstanding wedgetongues on said lates, a pair of wedge-blocks mountedon said wedge-plates and rovided with wedge-grooves to. receive sai wedgetongues, a second pair of wedge-plates secured to said housing and overlying said wedge-blocks, said last named plates being provided with downwardly wedge-tongues adapted to be engaged in wedge-slots in said wedge-blocks, article engaging jaws secured to the inner faces of said wedge-blocks, a link and lever mechanism connected to said wedge-blocks, and a fluid pressure cylinder for actuating said link and lever mechanism to reciprocate said wedgeblocks relative to sai wedge-plates and thereby-move said article engaging jaws toward and away from each other so as to grip and release the articles to be upset.
