Serial No. 402,132.
This invention relates tomaterial hany v dling devices and particularly to a device for un 1n connection with a straightening -mac e. f
Machines :forI thestraightening of bars, tubes or the like have taken various forms. In one type the article to be straightened is supported at spaced points and a straightening force is applie toa side thereof between tlie spaced supports. vUsually pressure must be appliedy several times, the article being rotated soas to make certain that the straightenin force 'is applied in ,the proper plane.
vslow to turn the article with hand wrenches or the like. I provide mechanically operated means for turning the article, such means preferably consisting of driven rollers. I also prefer that the turning means be yieldingly mounted so that when-the article ere the article is 'of- 15 large size as, vfor example, in the case of a large diameter tube or bar, it is diicult and itin the proper plane to the head 5 for another straightening stroke.
flexes under the straightening pressure, the' turning means will not interfere with the operation.
The turning device may, for example, be mounted on a fluid cylinder which serves to raise it to the operatin position which permits of it being lowere when desired. Stop means are provided for limiting the movement, such stops being preferably adjustable. In the accompanying drawings illustrating the present preferred embodiment, of the invention as ap lied to a machine for the straightening 'o pipes orround bars,
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the straightening machine with the turning device at either side thereof; Y
. Figure 2 is a top plan view of one of the turning devices; and l l L- Figure 3 is a side elevation thereof partly broken' away.
The straightening machine shown in Figto receive the rollers 4. The round article and is engaged by. a straightening head 5 I under the control of the operator. The head 5 is carried by-a reciprocable ram 6 oper- 5 ated by a-v motor 7. 'A backing wedge 8,
um 1 compnses a' bed 2 havmg *notches 3 4If desired, air pressure supplied through the This turning is eilz'ected by means of turning devices indicated generall by the reference. character 10 and locate one at either side of the bed 2.v One of such devices is illustrated in detail in Figures 2 and 3. It
The frame 11 is bored ask indicated at 18 l'comprises a frame 11 having brackets 12 to form a cylinder which its'over a piston 19 .upward movement at diierent points above the floor level. This is of particular value v when articles of diiierent sizes are to be handled. Y
If those portions of the article A extending beyond the rollersy 4 tend to lexdown w pipe; 21 may be cui;J oi so as to permit the turning device to lower. Ordinarily, however, this will not be necessary. After straightening pressure has'been applied the motors 17 are energized so as to rotate the i article into position for the application of another straightening force.
The device readily accommodates itself toI the handling of articles of different sizesr the only adjustment necessary bein the adjustment of the nuts 23. It will e noted that the. `cylinder 18 is so located that the center of gravity of the frame 11 with the mechanism carried thereon lies generally in the axis of the cylinder.
I have illustrated and described a present preferred embodiment of the invention. It will be understood, however, that it is not limited to the forms shown but may be other- Wise embodied Within the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
l. In combination with a straightening machine, eective for applying a force on the side of an article to e straightened, means for turning the article, said turning means beingyieldably mounted. A
2. In combination With a straightening machine effective for applying a force on the side of an article to be straightened, means for turning the article and fluid actuated means for urging the turning means to a desired position. i
3. In combination with a straightening machine eective for applying a force on the. side of an article to be straightened, means for turning the article, fluid actuated means for urging the turning means to a. desired position and a stop for the Huid actuated means.
4. In combination with a straightening machine, effective for applying a force on the side of an article to be straightened, rolls for turning the article and driving -means therefor, the rolls and their driving means being yieldably mounted.
5. In combination with a straightening machine elective for applying a force on the side of an article to be straightened, means for turning the article, and means for yieldably urging the turning means to a. desired position and a stop for limiting the, action of such means.
6. In combination with a straightening machine effective for applying a force on the side of an article to be straightened, means for 'turning the article, and means for yieldably urging the turning means to a desired y my hand.
position and a stop for limitin the action of such means, the stop being adjustable.
7. A turning device comprising a frame, a cylinder and piston mounting therefor whereby the frame may be moved by the application of fluid pressure, supporting rolls on the frame, and means mounted on the frame for rotating at least one of the rolls.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set CLARENCE J, KLEIN.
