My invention has reference to can construction and more especially to a novel can closure with a bail or handle and novel top construction and sealing means therefor.

The object of the invention is to provide a novel can closure and sealing means for cans such as are used for containing malted milk in powdered. form, althoughnot restricted to this use and which can be hermetically and positively sealed against the ingress of moisture; which permits the attachment to the closure of a bail or handle for carrying the can, which bail also facilitates the attachment and removal of the closure or screw cap.

Other and further objects of the invention will be apparent as the description proceeds. l

On the drawings Fig. 1 is a plan view of a. can constructed in accordance with the invention, the cap or closure being removed.

Referring to the drawings in detail, 5 designates the can, to the upper edge of which a top portion 6 is secured in any suitable manner, as by crimping 7, which in the present instance forms an upstanding flange. The adjacent portion of the top forms a depressed channel 8 within the crimped edge 01 flange 7 and the top has an annular raised or breast portion 9 within the depressed portion 8, which serves as a stiffening and reinforcing element for the top.

lVithin the raised portion 9, the top is provided with an annular depression or indenta tion 10 of less depth than the depression 8 and much wider than it is deep, having an inclined or inwardly sloping wall 11, the wall of the portion 10 being slightly inclined outwardly or inwardly but substantially horizontal, as shown, and terminating at its linner edge in an upstanding screw neck 12 around the opening 13, the upstanding neck portion 12 being directed or turned inwardly as at 14- and downwardly as at 15to form a depending flange and also a stiifening rib which incidentally serves to obviate an exposed or sharp ragged edge which would be likelyto injure a person projecting the hand into the can. Y

A screw cap or closure 16 is providedfor the can to cover the opening 13 and has its threaded flange 17 engaging the threads of the neck 12. In addition, the screw cap or closure has an annular flange or extension 18 around the same at it-s lower edge and preferably slightly inclined outwardly solas to be adapted to be received in the annular depression 10 and is slightly flattened Adown to snugly fit the same when the screw cap yor closure 16 is screwed down When the screw cap is in position, sealing wax or paraffine is poured into the annular depression over the flange or extension 18 to positively seal the can against the ingress of airand avoiding the absorption of moisture or of other injurious effect on the contents usually resulting from exposure to air or moisture such as fermentation, etc. p i

In order to facilitate the application and removal of the screw cap, a bail or handle 19 is provided, the same having eyes 20 at. its

ends engaging loops 21 at diametrically opposite sides of the can closure. The loops 21 are preferably formed at the ends of a semicircular section of wire 22 which is soldered around the cap so as to lie in one of the depressions of the screw threads, as indicated at 23, and the loops are bent at rightI angles to the direction of extent of the wire so as to extend vertically for receiving the eyes 20. The ends of the loops 21 are pref erably soldered to the can cap as indicated al 24. In addition to serving as a handle for the can, the bail also permits the cap to be firmly secured in position and easily unscrewed for removing the same. It will be noted from the drawings, especially Figs. 3

and 4, that the flange 18 has its outer edgel exposed and that yit is preferably disposed below the raised portion 9, so that parafne, sealing wax, or the like, 25, poured into the depression 10 after the cap is screwed into position, will cover the flange or extension 18 and its surrounding edge, and will thoroughly seal ther can at the closure.

While I have shown and described my invention in a preferred form, I am aware that various modifications and changes may be inade Without departing frointhe principles of the invention, the scope of which isl to be `determined from the appended claims.
