WINDOW CONSTRUCTION.
This invent-ion relates to window and door constructions constituting preferably a rectangular-shaped frame in which a window sash is vertically slidable. yThe invention is peculiarly adapted in its application to the doors of automobiles although it is not to be limited thereto.
The principal object of the invention is the production of a simple and inexpensive guideway for slidably receiving the window sash which may be readily installed and a portion of which shall also serve as a garnish strip attachable to the side 'trame of the window and adapted to give the window frame an ornamental appearance as well as to hide from view that part of the device which engages the window sash.
Further objects of the invention will appear from the accompanying description taken in connection with the attached draw.- ing in which:
Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a window or door frame showing the invention as applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Referring in detail to the several figures of the drawing:
The side members of a rectangular' frame are indicated at 1, said side members being preferably L-shaped in cross-section as indicated, the base of the L forming a portion of the outer wall of the frame while the legs thereof extend inwardly towards the inside of the door. The members 1 are fastened together by the upper and lower connecting members 2 and, if so desired, a lockboard or supporting plate indicated at 3 may extend across the members 1 on which may be supported any suitable mechanism for raising and lowering a window sash 4 and connected with said window sash. This mechanism, however, is not shown as it forms no part of the present invention.
The lower halt of the frame is preferably covered on its inner side by a covering such as upholstery 5 and on its outer side by a covering or upholstery 6, these coverings forming the inner and outer walls of a window well into and out of Which the Window sash 4 is vertically slidable. We also preferably employ a metallic window ssll 7 which may be secured in any desired manner to a flange S forming a portion of the.
lockboard 3, said window sill 7 being provided with an inturncd end as indicated in F 1g. 2 which firmly grips the covering or upholstery 5. The sides oit the window sill 7 In'et'erahlyv also taper inwardly toward the center of the window sash as Yillustrated in 9 indicates metallic guideways preferably formed of spring metal which are bent outwardly at .10 to form channels adjacent the inner sides of the bases of the L-slia-ped side members 1 and which frictionally and slidably receive therein a windowA sash 4. The outer free edge of each of said lguideways is preferably bent into substantial parallelism with the window sash as indicated at 11. These guideways are also provided with flanges 12 which are screwed, as by screws 13, at spaced distances to the inner side of the legs of the L-shaped member 1. The bodies of these guideways preferably follow in contour the contour of the sides of the window sill 7 and they are provided with openings 14 in alignment with the screws 13 whereby access may be conveniently had to said screws for the purpose of attaching the garnish strips to or detaching them from the side members 1.
The garnish strips not only act as a support for the window sash 4, but they give an ornamental appearance to the window frame and hide from view from the inner side` of the frame the channels 10 which serve as a guide and support for said window sash. They also act to till the space between the sides of the window sill and the side members l and may be cheaply and easily manufactui-ed.
lVhat we claim as our invention is l. A window frame provided with side members a combined metallic guideway and garnish strip fastened to said side members and provided with a free unsupported edge having channel members bent out of the metal thereof, a window sash having its side edges frietionally held and slidably mounted 'in said channel members and means whereby said guideways and garnish' strips may be detachably secured to or detached from said .frame while said sash is mounted therein.
2. A window frame provided with side members, a slidable window sash, combined i window frame, a slidable window sash and exerting lateral pressure against the edges of' said sash and the body of which follows the contour of the sides or ends of said .i window sill, said ruideways also being provided with a. fiange detaehably connected to said side members.
Li. A window frame provided wxth side members, a shdable window sash, metallic springlike garnishstrips provided with openings therein and with Channels bent out of the metal adjacent a free and unsupported edge thereof to slidably receive and support said window sash, Hanges on said guideways and means in alignment with said openings and extending through said flanges and into Said side members for detaehably holding said garnish strips to said side members.
5. A window frame provided with L- shaped side members metallic springlike garnish strips having,r one edge secured to the legs of said L-shaned side members while the other end is bent over upwardly toward the legs and into substantial parallelism with a face of the base ofv said side members but unsupported thereby channel members bent out of the metal of said garnish strips and a window Sash slidably and frictionallv held in said channel members.
6. In :i window frame provided with side members a slidable window therein, a rf gnideway for said window comprising a free and unsupported edge of a metallie member und a garnish strip running;r along said side members and integral with said guidewuy.
