Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FESTUS HAYDEN, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN THE METHOD OF MAKING AND ATTACHlNG METALLIC BUTTONS T0 CLOTHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1.682. dated July 10, 1840.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FEsTUs HAYDEN, of Waterbury, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful improvement in the manufacture of buttons for braces and other purposes, and
in the mode of attaching them to cloth, of which the following is a specification.
My invention and improvement consists in making the button in two parts-viz., the front plate or face and the shank or rivet. The front plate or body of the button is made in the usual form of brace or suspender buttons, except that instead of four holes in the concave part, for attaching them to the cloth,'I make one hole only,in the center. Theshank or rivet is made with a fiat head, and a neck to fit the hole in the center .of the button or body, and may be of composition metal and ast in a mold. Buttons thus formed are atinched to cloth by passing the neck of the shank through the cloth and then through the body of the button, and riveting them firmly together by means of a concave punch button, with the hole for the shank in the center of the concavepart; Fig.2, a side view of the back Fig. 3, the shank or rivet. Fig. 4 exhibits the button attached to cloth.
What I claim as my invention is- The method of attaching buttons to cloth by riveting, and of manufactuiing the parts for that purpose, combined in the mannersubstantiall y as specified above, and therefor solicit Letters Patent.
May 16, 1840.
