WINDOW POLE.
Application filed May 16, 1927. Serial No. 191,780.
My invention relates to winoows, and to a pole to be employed with the casing and sash of the window for operating the sash.
In my copending application for patent,
No.'154,665, filed Dec. 14, 1926, I have shown a window adapted to slide in the casing upon riders from which it is adapted to swing at one end and to be removed from the rider. My present invention comprises a specially constructed pole for use with this type of window so that the sash may be released and removed from the rider.
It is an object of the invention to provide a pole with which the sash may be elevated and released from the rider and which will guard against the accidental removal of the sash from the operating pole when the window is being swung into reverse position.
Referring to the drawing herewith for a better understanding of the invention, Fig. 1 is a broken perspective view illustrating the upper end of the casing and the sash employed therewith and showing the application of my invention thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the structure disclosed in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the invention with the handle broken away; and Fig. 4 is a front View thereof taken at right angles to the view shown in Fig. 3.
In the application of my invention, it is contemplated that there will be a window casing including a jamb 1 having a channel 2 therein, within which a sash 3 is slidable. The head 4t of the window has a lower plane surface.
The sash and easing disclosed in the drawings is of steel sheet metal construction, but it is of course understood that my invention may be applied to any desired type of sash and casing in which the sash is mounted on the rider, as shown in my prior application, above referred to. The sash 3 is adapted to be mounted upon riders 5 shaped to fit within the channels 2'of the casing. The rider is of channel sheet metal construction and has on the side toward the sash a short slot or recess 6 within which a laterally projecting pin 7 upon the sash is adapted to fit. The sash may also be secured to the rider in a slidable manner at the lower end, if desired. It is to be understood, of course, that there are riders at both sides of the sash slidable in channels 2 within the casing and each rider having the same pin and slot connection with the sash.
The sash has approximately centrally of its width on the upper rail 8 a plate or bracket 9, upon which is a forwardly projecting arm 10 with an opening 11 therein to co-operate with the operating pole. The head 4 of the frame has an opening 12 therein immediately above the arm 10 upon the sash.
The operating pole is adapted to engage with the opening 12 in the sotfit and also within the opening 11 of the sash bracket. It has. therefore, a handle 1% upon which is secured at the forward end a rod 15 which projects axially from the handle for a suitable distance and then is extended laterally at 16 and is again turned forwardly to provide a finger 17 to engage within the opening 12 in the head. At a point about centrally of the rod 15 is a laterally branching arm 18 at right angles to the rod 15, said arm having a finger 19 in approximate alignment with the finger 17 and extending forwardly so as to engage within the opening 11 in the sash bracket when the finger 17 is within the head of the window casing.
The operation will be approximately as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. The sash and rider will be raised upwardly to a point adjacent the upper end ofthe casing and this may be done by introducing the finger 19 into the opening 11 in the sash plate and raising the sash until the finger 17 upon the upper end of the pole engages within the opening 12 in the window head. The pole then constitutes a lever having a fulcrum within the opening 12 in the casing, the lower end of the pole constituting the power arm. If the sash is lifted through the medium of the pole and then swung forwardly into the room the action upon the sash will be to raise it upward- 1y a sufficient amount to raise the pin 7 from the slot 6 in the rider and drawing forward on the sash so as to move it free of the rider and allow it to swing into the room toward the operator.
The pole may be then lowered, removing the finger 17 of the pole from engagement with the window head and the sash may be carefully lowered into reverse position.
I have found this operating pole of peculiar advantage in raising a heavy sash free of the rider and then allowing it to be low ered on its lower pivot into the room without danger of accident. A heavy metal sash is liable to swing accidentally into the room when freed from the rider and serious injury may be received by the operator. The
finger 19 upon the operating pole will be seen to be curved slightly upward in Figs. 3 and 4: so that there will be little danger of accidental release of the sash. It is believed that the further advantages of the device will be clear to those skilled in the art.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A window pole for the purpose set forth comprising a handle, a rod axially of said handle at the forward end thereof, said rod being bent laterally and then forwardly to provide a fulcrum finger to engage a support, a lateral arm on said rod, a finger on said arm aligned approximately with said fulcrum finger and adapted to engage a windowsash for the purpose stated.
mer es 2. A window pole comprising a handle, a rod at the forward end thereof, a forward fulcrum linger on said rod and a lateral sash engaging finger, said fingers being approximately aligned atone side of the axial line of said pole.
3. A window pole for raising and swinging a window sash in its frame, including a forward arm on said pole adapted to engage within an opening in said casing and forming a fulcrum, a lateral finger on saiclpole below said fulcrum adapted to engage said sash, whereby said pole maybe employed as a lever to raise said sash. i
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature this 11th day of May A. 111927.
