Description

Aug. 21, 1 9 28. 0. MARCH MATCH BOX HOLDER Filed March 1927 VENTOR ATTOR N EY Patented Aug. 21, 1928.
U NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' CARL MARCH, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
MATClI-BOX HOLDER.
Original application filed September 8, 1-926, Serial No. 134,316. Divided and this application filed March 4, 1927. Serial No. 172,862.
This invention relates to match box holders and is a divisional application of my application Serial No. 134,316, filed Septemher 8, 1926, which has matured into patent No. 1,637,260, issued July 26, 1927.
The general object of the present invention is to provide a match box holder designed to receive a box of matches commonly known as safety matches which are generally contained in a match carrier slidably mounted in a cover and said holder will not only prevent the box from being damaged but includes means for automatically arranging the carrier to open position when it is desired to move a match therefrom.
A further object of the invention is to provide a holder for match boxes that is extremely simple in construction, neat in appearance, strong and durable and 1S 1nexpensive to manufacture.
'This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, il-
@ lustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompany ng drawings wherein like characters denote l1ke or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which:
Figure l is a front elevation of the holder which forms the subject matter of the present invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view with the parts in open position. b
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the body of the match box holder.
Referring to the drawings in detail the letter A indicates a match box of the usual construction and which includes a match carrier and a cover therefor. The holder is provided with a body 1 preferably formed from metal and includes a bottom 2, end walls 3 and 4, and front and rear walls 5 and 6. The latter walls have their ends spaced from the end walls as best shown in Figure 4 of the drawings.
The match box A is disposed between the respective walls and is best shown in Figure 4, the walls 5 and 6 are of the same size, and terminate below the walls 3 and 4, while the wall 3 terminates below the wall 4. A flexible covering 7 has one end arranged upon the upper edge of the wall 4 and secured thereto by a thread and the like which passes through parallel openings 8 formed in said wall 4. The flexible covering also covers the bottom, and end wall 3, and is secured to the end wall-3 by a thread which passes through openings 9. The flexible covering thence is arranged in substantially U-shaped formation as best shown in Figure 1 and is provided with a socketed mem-- ber 10 adapted to be associated with the stud member 11. Secured to the bottom 2 of the body is one end convolution of a substantially conical shape coil spring 12 while the uppermost and largest convolution of said spring 12 is secured to a follower plate 13 adapted to engage the carrier of the box of matches as best shown in Figure 2 and for elevating the same as shown in said figure when the flexible covering 7 is released.
From. the above description and disclosure of the drawings, it will be obvious that the match box holder which forms the sub j ect matter of the present invention not only adequately protects a box of matches from being damaged while being carried in the pocket of a user, but when the securing means of the flexible cover is released, the coil springs will automatically elevate the carrier to its open position as shown in Figure 2, and so that a match may be easily and readily removed.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
lVhat I claim is:
A match box holder of the character de scribed comprising a body including a bottom, end walls of a different height secured to said bottom and being provided with openings adjacent the upper edges thereof, front and rear walls of uniform size and being arranged in spaced relation from the end walls, a substantially conical shape coil spring having one end convolution secured to the bottom, a follower secured to the uppermost and largest convolution of said spring, and being adapted to engage the carrier of a match box disposed in said body, flexible means secured to said end Walls and underlying said bottom, threads passing through said openings for securing said covering to said end Walls, said flexible strip being arranged in substantially U-shaped formation from its connection with one end Wall and means for securing the ends of said flexible strip together about the top of the carrier for retaining the latter in closed position against the tension of the spring.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
CARL MARCH.
