Description

I UNITED lSrirrEs PATENT OEEIcE. i
JAMES M. MGHELM, 0E CARLISLE', KENTUCKY.
IMPROVEMENT IN ASH-FANS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,168, dated September 28, 1875 application file May 28, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
4 Be it known that I, JAMES M. MGHELM, of Carlisle, in the county ot' Nicholas and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ash- Pan, of which the fol- -the fire to be conveniently stirred, the fine coal to be readily separated from the ashes, the heat to be readily controlled, and flat-irons to be readily heated.
. The invention will first be described in connection with drawing and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents the ash-chamber, in which'is placed the drawer B, that receives the ashes and enables them to be removed. Gis ascreen that rests upon lugs or pins formed upon or attached to the sides of the ash chamber A just above the drawer B, so as to receive the ashes and line coal as they fall from the fire- 4, grate, and retain the line coal, while allowing the ashes to fall through it into the drawer B. The screen G is provided with rings c or other handles, to enable it to be conveniently handled. D is the poker, whichis made with a cross-bar, the ends of `which work in lugs or other supports attaehedto the ash-chamber A. Upon the inner side ofthe cross-bar of the poker D are formed one or more slightlycurved fingers, which, when'the poker is worked, pass up through the spaces between the bars of the grate, and thus stir the re.
The handle of the poker D passes out through a vertical slot in the front of the ash-chamber A, so that it can be conveniently operated. This construction enables the poker to be readily detached when desired. In the front. of the ash chamber are formed a number of vertical slots, .which are covered by-a sliding plate, E, so that the fire, and with it the heat, may be controlled as desired. F is a detachable sheh", which rests upon the top of the front of the ash-chamber'A, where it is secured by pins and eyes, or other suitable fastenings. The shelf F is made with low anges along` Vits side edges, and is designed to hold smoothing or sad irons while being heated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim Y as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with slotted front of a poker, D, having a lingered cross-bar pivoted in open bearings between ash pan screen and superposed grate, as shown and described, to make said poker readily detachable.
