-v Application filed October y51, 1927. Serial No. 229,827.
Our invention relates to improvements in signs, and more particularly to changeable signs for store or other display windows.
The primary object of our invention is `the provision of a` simple and Vinexpensive sign` of'this kind Whichhas its body portion integral and preferably stamped of' sheet metal and `which is provided with means whereby cards Aare adapted to be interchangeably held. Y
Another object of our invention is the fprovision of a sign of the kind mentioned inwhich card receiving or display openings are formed in anintegral metallic 4plate and retainer flanges provided for the cards which arestruck up from the metal above and beneath suchopenings. o
A further object of our invention-is the provision of a sign of the kind mentioned,
`adapted to be secured to a store or other displa `window and having interchangeable cards caring letters, figures, or otherv characters and arrangedV in horizontal rows spaced apart, and in providing the sign with openings bet-Ween said horizontal rows of cards for the passage of light therethrough.
With the above and other objects in View,
the invention consists in the novel features i of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the subjoined claims. In the drawings F ig. l is a frontelevation of a sign constructed in accordance `with our invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the same. showing the sign applied to the inner side of a storeor other display window. y Y
Fig. 3 is a Ahorizontal section taken on Vline 3,-3, Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 `is a horizontal section taken on vline 4 4, l. Y
sufficient size to displaya number of lines Votv printed matter.
The sign substantially rectangular and the marginal portions thereof are stiflened bycurling the metal around a wire or wires 7, as at 8. i i
`For the purpose of providing a finish to the upper end of the sign, a name plate 9 is riveted or otherwise Vsecured thereto on` which any desired matter may be embossed, g
cast, or otherwise applied.
Transverse card-receiving or display openings 10 are cut out of the body portion, and these are arranged in a vertical series, the openings extending almost from' side edge to side edge of said. bodyportion. If
desired, the lowermost card-receiving or diss play opening may .be considerably, larger than the remaining openings, but such ar rangement is merely a matter of choice and depends considerably on the manufacturer or `the purpose for which :the sign is tobe used. VThese card o enino's 10 as the ma c a Y be referred to, are arranged between open ings ll, which are transversely coeXtensive with the card openings 10, and are separated therefrom by transverse bars 12.
The metal displaced from the body p0rtion 6 to form the card openings 10 is completely severed from the body portion and scrapped, while the metalidisplaced to form thespacing openings 1l is utilized to forni card retainer flanges 13.
Therlnetal displaced to forni the` upper-` most spacing opening 11 is `bent rearwardly and downwardlyupon the cross bar v12 di- 'rectlybeneath and spaced therefrom to form acard guide 14, while the metal displaced to form the lowermost spacing opening 11-is bent rearwardly and upwardly upon the cross bar l2 directly above and spaced therefrom to form a card guide 15. The metal displaced fronrthe remaining spacing open.- ings 11 is partly bent rearwardly and upwardly and partly rearwardly and downwardly, and for this purpose it must `be slit transversely and in a line centrally between the upper and lower edges of'said spacing openings the metal thusdisplaced forming the retainer flanges on the intermediate bars 12 to form card guides 16. Theseveral retainer.flanges 13 are arranged on the rear los side of the body portion so that the front i side, which is the side displayed through a Cil store or other window, indicated by the numeral 17, has a finished appearance. y
By providing spacing openings between the card openings l() and also above and beneath the series of said openings, light is allowed to pass through the sign and enter the interior of a store when the sign is secured to a store window. This we consider an important feature of our invention, particularly in respect to the manner in which these spacing openings are formed, as signs designed to be secured to store and like display windows, while considered desirable from the viewpoint of having an attractive location, are not conunonly so used, due to the fact that they obstruct the passage of light into the interior of the store'.
The guides 14, l5 and 1G are open at their ends, as at 18, so that'cards 19 may be conveniently placed betweentwo opposed retainer flanges disposed at opposite sides of each card opening, and these cards preferably contain a single letter or other character so that they maybe arranged to form any desired word, or impart any desired information. l
By making the lowermost card opening somewhat larger than the remaining card openings, a card of special size will be required for this opening, thus enabling a merchant using the sign to display the par ticnlar matter of interest in more attractive form. In the sign shown in the drawings the price is placed within the large card opening, whereasthe particular article thus priced is disclosed by assembling cards to indicate the goods oiered at such a price. The cards are easily removable so that the matter displayed kmay be changed as often as desired.
For the purpose of attaching the sign to a window, as indicated in Fig. 2, rubber suction cups 2O are secured to the body' portion of the sign at the corners thereof, these being fastened to the sign in any approved manner. By moistening the window, or the edges of the cups, it is simply necessary to press these cups against the window, when thesuction created therein, upon releasing pressure, will assure a secure fastening of the signy to the window. When fastened in place, the cards may be conveniently placed within the card guides formed by the retainer flanges 13 and they are as readily removable therefrom to permit of changing the Vsign without removingthe same from the window. Y
Having thus described our invention,
' l. A sign having an integral body portion openings.
provided with a Vertical series of transversely elongated card openings, spacing openings between said card openings, transverse bars between said card and spacing openings having inlegral card retainer llanges, the retainer flanges of the cross bars above and below each card opening being oppositely arranged, and an element bearing characters removably fitted between oppositely arranged retainer flanges and c isplayed through said card openings.
2. A sign formed of a sheet of metal having card openings, spacing openings adjacent said card openings, and bars between said card openings and said spacing openings, each ot said bars having an integral retainer flange along at least one 'of its edges formed from the metal displaced to form at least a part of one of said spacing openings, and Cards removably retained by the retainer flanges of said bars and displayed through said eardopenings.
3. A sign formed of a sheet of metal having transverse card openings, transverse spacing-openings, and cross bars between said card openings and said spacing openings, each of said'cross bars having integral retainer flanges along its upper and lower edges formed by material having been displaced yfrom said sheet of metal to form said spacing openings, and cards removably inserted between said cross bars and their retainer flanges to be displayed through said card openings.
4. A sign having a body portion formed of a flat sheet of metal, a vertical series of card openings formed in said body portion, spacing openings transversely co-extensive with said card openings, said spacing openings being arranged above and beneath said series of card openings and also between said card openings, cross bars above and beneath each card opening and separating said card openings from saidspacing openings, said cross bars having integral retainer flanges along their upper and lower edges formed by rebending the marginal portions thereof rearwardly,7 and retaining such rebent portions in spaced relation thereto, said o relient portions having been displaced from said body portion to form said spacing openings, and cards bearing characters removably inserted in the spacesbetween said cross bars and their retainer flanges, said cards being displayed through said card In witness whereof we aflix our signatures.
