Description

G. A. SMITH. Shutter-l-"as tening.
No. {68,057, PatentedSept.2l,l875.
UNITED. STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES A. SMITH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OE ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO DAVID HOFFEB, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SHUTTER-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 168,057, dated September 21, 1875; application filed 4 August 26, 1875.
OAsE C.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs A. SMITH, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Turn- Buckles for Window-Shutters; and do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, in which the figure'is a perspective of my invention applied to use.
The object of this invention is to provide a turn-buckle which shall serve the purpose of the ordinary device, so termed, without causing injury to the wood of the shutters on account of friction with the inner edge of the turn-buckle catch.
This invention accordingly consists of a turn-buckle having a weighted shank, and
having likewise on its upper end, arranged,
at an angle of about forty-five degrees to the shank, a triangular catch, the front and rear *edges of'which converge to a point, and the upon or against which the shutter may impinge without becoming indented or cut.
Referring to the drawings, A is the pivoted shank of the turn-buckle, formed with the weight A on its lower end, and with the laterally-situated triangular catch B on its upper end, said catch having its front and rear edges inclined to a point. The lateral arrangement of the catch and the bevel or inclination-of its sides have the effect of causing the turnbuckle to swing when force is applied to place the shutter behind or forward ofthe catch. a designates the inclined ear or flange, projecting laterally and producing a wide surface, which may, and perhaps should, be made convex, as shown.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved swiveled turn-buckle, consisting of the shank A, having the weight A, and provided with the triangular catch B, arranged obliquely thereto, and having its front and rear edges inclined, as shown, and its rear edge formed with the laterally-projecting ear or flange a, substantially as shown and described, for the purpose set forth. 7
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 17th day of August, 1875.
CHARLES A. SMITH.
