IMPROVEMENT IN HARNESS-COCKEVE S.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 1 68,054, dated September 21, 1875; application filed June 29, 1875.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, JOHN J. SCHNEIDER and ALEXANDER S. MEEK, of Bedford, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments'in Harness, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, in which Figure l is a side elevation of a harness-tug with our improvement attached. Fig. 2 is the same with the plug removed. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the case through as m. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the clip. Fig. 5 shows modifications of invention.

Our invention relates to a mode of attaching the clip to the tug of harness; and it consists in the combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

In order to enablecothers skilled in the art to make and use our invention, we will proceed to describe the exact manner in which we have carried it out.

In the drawings, A represents a metal case or box, provided with the arm a, by which it is secured to the tug of harness by means of ordinary rivets. The end of the case A is slotted to receive the two arms of the clip B, as shown'in Fig. 2. The arms of the clip are provided with beveled heads b b, tittin g against the beveled incline a in the chamber of the case A, as shown in Fig. 3. 7

From this description it is evident that when pressure is brought to bear on' the clip B the tendency of the beveled extensions b b is toward the rear of the chamber, and away from the plug 0, by which the clip is held in position, the plug 0 and plate 0 being held on their seat by means of a screw, 0 passing from the rear of the case, or by any other convenient means.

The operation of our device is as follows: When it becomes necessary to attach the tug ofv the harness to the haines, the screw is removed, the plate 0 and plug O are lifted from their seat, and the clip detached fromthe case A, and passed around a staple in the berries. The clip is then returned to its position in the case, and the plug again fastened in position, thus affording a ready and simple means for attaching and detaching theharness. This position of the clip we use in connection with the curved or twisted staple, which is made the subject of another application for a patent.

When it is desired to use our invention with the common hame-staple, the clip B is formed with its arms fitting in the single vertical slot in the case A, as shown in Fig. 5, by which means the ring of the clip is placed at right angles to the line of the hames.

In this modification of our invention the arms of the clip are made to bear against the opposite sides of the chamber, as in the form previously described, and with the same tendency toward the rear of the chamber, and away from the plug.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The case A, provided with the arm a, and having a slotted chamber, in combination with the clip B, provided with the arms and beveled heads b b, and plug 0, constructed to operate substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
