Application filed July 24,1926. Serial No. 124,765.
My invention relates to a new and useful away, taken on substantially line 2-2 of improvement in a box adapted particularly 1. for containing cookies, crackers and other ig. 3 is a sectional view taken on subsimilar commodities which are generally stantially line 3-301. Fig. 2. placed in the box in separated layers. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary side elevational In the sale of cookies from a box it is view of the blank from which the base is customary to remove the cookies from the made. box by hand, the separating members of Fig. 5 is aside elevational view of a modithe difierent layers being removed as the fied form of the invention. 10 different layers of cookies are taken from the Fig.6 is a sectional view taken on subbox. stantially line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
As the cookies are used so'that it is neces- The box in its preferred form comprises sary to reach into the box a considerable side walls 7 and 8 and end walls 9 and 10. distance, the cookies are often broken and Punched from the end walls 9 and 10am 5 otherwise damaged. tongues 11 which may be thrust inwardly as 05 I It is an object of thepresent invention to clearly appears from Fig. 2 and Fig; 3. provide a box whereby the contents thereof The bottom or supporting member of the may always be retained in close proximity box is made from a blank having a main to the top so that they may be easily rebody 12 .provided with side flaps 13 and 14 20 moved while in plain sight of the person reand end flaps 15 and 16. These side flaps moving them without requiring the reaching and end flaps are turned to extend at right of the hand deeply into the box. angles to the main body 12, so as to form Another object of the invention is the proshallow side walls of the base or supporting vision of a box having a removable base or member. Projecting outwardly centrally 25 supportingmember which may be raised tofrom the end flaps 15 and 16 are tongues 15 ward the top of the box as the difi'erent layand 16 respectively, each of these tongues ers of the contents thereof are removed, so being ada ted for projection through a slit as to bring the lower layers of contents into 17 forme in the side walls 9 and 10. closer proximity to the top of the box. In mounting the base in the side walls,
30 Another object of the invention is the prothe base proper is inserted therein, -the vision of means on the side walls of the tongues 11 being parallel to the end walls 9 box for engaging the movable base or supand 10 and the tongues 15 and 16' being porting member and retaining it in its 'Vaprojected through the slits 17. As the conrious positions of elevation. tents'of the box are removed by an upward 35 Another object'of the invention is the propull on the tongues 15' and 16, the bottom vision of a box of this kind which will be is raised, upon which the lowermost set of simple in structure, economical of manu tongues 11 are pressed inwardly to supfacture and highly efiicient in use. port the box in its position.
Other objects will appear hereinafter. Punched from the tongues 15 and 16 are The invention consists in the combination tongues 15" and 16" respectively which are and arrangement of parts hereinafter deadapted for being projected outwardly from scribed and claimed. one face of the tongues 15' and 16', so as to The invention will be best understood by engage the side walls 9 and 10 and assist a reference to the accompanying drawings the tongues 11 in supporting the movable 45 which form a part of this specification and base or supporting member. in which, l l In Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 I have shown the out- Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the invenline of a cover 18 in dotted hues and it Wlll tion with parts broken away. be noted that the slits 17 are out below the Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the invention lower edge of the cover so that the projection with parts in side elevation and parts broken of the tongues 15' and 16' through the slits will not interfere with the placing of the cover on the box. It is thus apparent that I have provided a movable base which may be raised to various positions of adjustment so that the contents of the container when removed therefrom may be brought upwardly into closer proximity to the top, so as to always be readily accessible to the person removing the contents therefrom.
In Fig. 5 I have shown a modified form of the box in which the side wall 9 and the side wall 10' are provided with outwardly projecting channel forming ribs 19, these ribs being formed by a crimping of the side walls 9 and 10', the crimping being effected by a doubling over of the ends 20 of the channel upon each other. Engaging in the channel thus formed is a ton e 21 which is attached to the base 22, a suitable pin 23 being projected through an opening 24 formed in the channel bearing member 19, so as to engage the undersurface of the base 22 and retain it in its various positions of adjustment, a plurality of these openings 24 being provided as clearly shown in Fig. 5. This type is particularly adapted for use with tin or metal boxes, the preferred form being especially adapted for use where the box is made from paper or other similar material.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of my invention, I do not wish to limit myself to the precise form of structure shown, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications of structure as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A box, comprising: side and end walls; i
a bottom slidably positioned between said walls; lifting tongues projecting upwardly from 0p osite sides of said bottom and projected tirough slits formed in opposite walls; a plurality of superimposed relatively spaced tongues punched from said opposite walls and pressible inwardl for engaging the undersurface of said ottom for retaining it in its various positions of elevation; and a plurality of spaced tongues punched from each of said lifting tongues and pressible outwardly therefrom for engaging the edges of said slits for assisting in retaining said bottom in its various positions of elevation in said side and end walls, the space between the tongues on said walls and the tongues on said lifting tongues being coordinated so that upon the engagement of one of the tongues on said walls with the undersurface of said bottom, one of the tongues on said lifting tongues will be in registration with said slits for projection therethrough.
In testimony whereof, I have signed the foregoing.
ALI HADI.
