LOCOHOTIVE STRUCTURE.
Application filed August 19, 1828/ Serial 110. 180,208.
My invention relates to railway rolling stock and consists in an improved construction of underfraining for locomotives of the articulated type.
The main ob'ect of my invention is to provide an articulated underirame for a locomotive in which each of the articulated por-.
I a o desire to provi e cast steel under-- frame members on which the steam cylinders may be directly mounted and which will have integral portions formingbparts of the steam passageways from the iler to the cylinders.
I also desire in such production to provide integral brackets for the application of brake cylinders, hangers, and levers, for the mounting of a cradle member and for mounting a front coupler or other draft transmitting device. 7
In the accompanyin drawings which i1- 5 lustrate a selected em odiment of my invention-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the two main units of my improved underframe assembled with each other and showing the main elements of the locomotive superstructure in broken lines.
Figures 2 and '3, respectively, are top and side views of the front underframe member illustrated in Figure 1.
Figures 4 and 5 are similar views of the rear underframe member illustrated in Figure 1.
Figures'6, 7, and 8 are longitudinal vertical sections on lines 6-6, 7-7, and 8-8,
respectively, of Figure 2.
Figures 9 to 22, inclusive, are vertical transverse sections on lines 9-9, 10-.10, etc. of Figure 3.
Figure 23 is a vertical lon 'tudinal section taken on lines 2323 of i are 4.
Figures 24 to 30, inclusive, and igures 33, 34, and 35,' are vertical transverse sections taken on lines 24-24, 25'25, etc. of Figure 5.
Figures 31 and 32 are horizontal sections taken on lines 31-31 and 32-32 of Figure 5.
I shall refer to the front underframe unit generally by the reference letter A and shall refer to the rear underframe unit generally by the reference letter B. Each of these units consists of a one-piece casting having spaced sides, the sides of unit A having recesses 1 for receiving the driver boxes (not shown) and at either side of these recesses the side portions 2 are substantially boxshaped in cross section to :provide rigid pedestal and load transmitting sections. These sidesare connected by transverse elements disposed both horizontally as indicated at 3 in various cross sections, and vertically as indicated at 4, these various transverse elements being provided with openings and recesses 5 for lightening the same for providin access to the space between the sides an for accommodating various items of equipment, such as piping, brake rigging, etc.
The unit is provided with an outwardly extending member 6 havingupwardly facing bearings 7 adapted to slidably support suitable brackets 8 mounted on the boiler C. Another transverse member 9 has its top face finished to provide a bearing for a similar bracket 10.
Between the recesses 1 in the sides of the casting are located suitable fulcrums 11 on which the equalizers not shown) are mounted and below these fulcrums are brackets 12 for mounting the brake hangers.
The lefthand end of unit A terminates in a bracket 13 upon which the buffer beam 14 and draft devices 15 may be mounted. Between brackets 13 and the nearest pedestal I provide a machined face 16 for mounting the steam cylinder (not shown) and the inner portion of the casting adjacent faces 16 are provided with suitable webs arrang to form steam passageways 17 leading to the cylinders. Transverse member 9', previously referred to, has an integral steam passageway forming portion 18 terminating 1n mtegral flanges 19, and it will be understood that suitable piping (not shown) connects passageways l7 and 18.
The forward portion of unit is also provided with a center pin guide 19 which serves as a bearing for a pivoted pony truck. the wheels of which are indicated at 20 in Figure 1. Suitable valve gear brackets 21 are provided on the sides of the frame adjacent to the cylinder mounting.
At the rear end of unit A I provide a centrally located rearwardly extending integral projecting tongue 22, forming a pivotal joint element which fits into the pocket 23 (see Figure 23) formed on the forward end of unit B and provided with suitable bosses 24 for receiving the pivot pin which assembles the two underframe units. Longitudinal stresses are transmitted through these elements. Vertical loads are passed from one unit to the other by means of the tongues 38 and recesses 39 which slidably interengage, permitting longitudinal and lateral movement of their contact surfaces.
The portion of unit B above pocket forms a saddle 25 to which the boiler C is rigidlv secured and near the rear .end of unit suitable brackets 26 are provided for the boiler supporting expansion plates 27 (see Figure 1). It will be understood that the rear end of the boiler is free to move longitudinally of underframe unit B but cannot move transversely of the same. The forward part of the boiler is free to move longitudinally and transversely of under-frame unit A. This mounting of the boiler takes care of the relative movement between the boiler and the underframe units due to expansion and contraction and due to travel of the locomotive on curved track.
The boiler saddle 25 has an integral steam passageway 28 formed therein and other steam passageways such as 29 are provided in the casting and lead to the faces 30 on which the steam cylinders for the rear unit of the underframe are mounted.
The sides of unit B are provided with driving box recesses 31 and pedestal portions 32 similarly to the corresponding parts of the front unit A and the sides also have equalizer and brake rigging fulcrums 33 and 35, respectively, corresponding to fulcrums 11 and 12in unit A.
The rear end of unit B terminates in brackets 36 to which the locomotive cradle v37 (see Figure 1) may be attached.
The structure described eliminates a large amount of the machining and assembling work required for the ordinary built-up structure and produces a two unit underframe of greater strength, for a given weight. than a built-up structure. The delays and expense, due to repairs, and other disadvantages of built-up structure are also avoided.
The details of my invention may be modified substantially without departing from the spirit thereof and I contemplate the exclusive use of such details as come within the scope of my claims.
