Application filed January My invention relatesto drill sharpening mechanisms, and .more particularly to devices for the purpose of opening the holes through which cleansing fiuid is supplied in the case of drill steels.
Anobje'ct of my invention is to provide an improved hole opening or fpinning out mechanism. Another object of my invention is to'providean improved pinning out mechanism of a type in which the pinning tool is fed bypower toward and fromthe work. A further object of my invention is r to provide an improved pinning mechanism of the percussive type in which the pinning tool may be positively fed into the work and positively retracted while being hammered'to facilitate its withdrawal. Other iobjects and advantages of my invention will.

In this embodiment of my invention I haveshown the same mounted upon a frame 1- which provides a t'able 2 atits upper side. Upon' the table 2 is secured a combined pin ning: out motor and feeding mechanism, gen erally, designated 3 and comprising a cylln der 4; having'herein opposite heads 5 and 6 each of which provides a guiding means as at 7 and 8 for piston rod portions 9 andlO. The latter are fixed to a member 12 within the cylinder etywhich member constitutes a piston (for the cylinder 4 and houses a motor for actuating a pinning tool 13. A spring held tool retainer 35 is arranged to always hold the pin 13 within the reach of the piston 15 so that even during retraction of the pin the same may still be. hammered, even during withdrawal. The modeof operation of my invention as illustrated herein is as follows: Assume that a steel has been arranged within the vise 36 as shown at 37. The air supply to the valve 29 having been turned on, the latter will.
be turned by means of the handle 31 to a position in which the port 30 will communicate with the passage 28, while the passage 27 will be connected by the groove 32 to the exhaust 33. Air will accordingly pass to the rear end of the cylinder 1 and tend to,
force the piston 12 toward the left. Simultaneously a portion of the air will unseat the right hand valve 22 and pass through the passage2l to the port 16,.the other valve 22 being then held closed by air pressure. From the inlet port 16 the groove 17 will distribute the fluid to the passages 18 and 19 to efiect hammering operation of the piston 15 andfthe exhaust fluid will'flow through the ports 24-, passage 25 and port 26 to the atmosphere. When the penetration of the pin 13 is sufficient, the lever 31 will be operated to reverse the position of the valve 29 and air will then be supplie'dtolthf front end of the cylinder 41, while the rearend of the cylinder 4 will be connected to the exhaustr- Air will then pass-the other valve 22 and operate the'motor during retraction,

1. In a hole opening punching mechanism,
a feed cylinder, a motor disposed witliin said feed cylinder and including a punch operating piston, and means for supplying .fiuid pressure to the last mentioned motor including a passage extending from end to end thereof andcontrolled by a checlr valve 'at'eitlier end. 7
2. In a hole opening punching mechanism, a support for a drill steel, a stationaryfeed cylinder arranged adjacent said support, a
operating motor reciprocable relative to said feed cylinder and drawing its fluid supply'in alternation from the opposite ends of said feed'cylinder, and means operative to continually maintain llllGlJlIl withinithe' action ofsaid motor during retraction.
3. A drill steel punching mechanism comprising a punch, a percussive motor for actuating the same, pressure fluidmeans for feeding and-retracting said motor including a double acting cylinder and piston mechanisinone of whose elements is movable w th the.percussivemotor, and means for supply-' ing pressurefluid to said double actingcylin- 'der and piston mechanism to effect opposite feeding movements,-said element movable with the percussive motor beingtraversed completely by a passage connected between 7 its ends. with the percussive motor and hav- 7 ring mechanism arranged adjacent thereto, a pinoperating motor reciprocable relative to .said feeding mechanism, said feeding mechanismincluding a cylinder surrounding said. ,motor, and'means including a common valve ing a check valve therein at each side of the connection with the percussive motor.

In a hole opening mechanism, a feed cylinder, a piston movable therein, a percussive motor carried by said piston, means for supplying pressure fluid to said feed cylinder, and means for supplying pressure fluid to said motor including ports leading to the opposite ends of said feed cylinder, and alternatively operative check valves.
13. In a hole opening mechanism, a pin, a pressure fluid actuated percussive motor adapted to actuate said pin, pressure fluid acmeans disposed coaxially with said motor at the rear end thereof for'exhausting pressure fluid from said motor.
14. In a hole opening mechanism, a pin, a pressure fluid actuated percussive motor adapted to actuate said pin, pressure fluid actuated feeding means therefor, means for supplying pressure fluid to said motor selectively through the opposite ends thereof to effect operation thereof in either direction of feed, and means disposed coaxially with said motor for exhausting fluid from both ends of said motor.
