DRILLING APPARATUS.
Application filed December 28,1917. Serial No. 209,320.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, inthe county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and I useful Improvements 1n Drilling Apparatus,
of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to drilling apparatus, preferably that of the motive fluid operated type having a hammer piston, and the object is to provide means for delivering theexhaust to the drill bit for cleansing purposes, this means being so constructed that dirt will not find access to the motor orassociated mechanism from which the exhaust is taken.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein v Figure l is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through the preferred form of construction.

In the embodiment disclosed, the drilling mechanism includes a drill actuating motor 4t comprising a cylinder member 5 in which is located a reciprocatory hammer piston 6. In advance of this hammer piston is a rotatable chuck 7 arranged to receive the rear end of a drill steel 8 that is adapted to be struck by the hammer piston in a manner well understood.
F or the purpose of rotating the chuck,
and therefore the drill steel engaged therein, a rotary motor is employed consisting of a casing 9 containing rotary piston mechanism 10, the same being connected to gearing 11 engaged as shown at 12 with the chuck for the purpose of rotating the latter. Motive fluid is supplied to the drill actuating motor from any suitable source through a throttle valve 13, this valve having a port 1% movable into and out of communication with distributing channels 15 and 16 that deliver fluid to the hammer piston 6 to reciprocate the same. A suitable exhaust port 15 is provided which is crossed by the head of the hammer piston 6 to permit motive fluid to escape alternately on opposite sides thereof. In like manner motive fluid is supplied to the drill rotating motor 9-10 through a throttle valve 17 having aport 12 movable into and out of communication wltha passageway 19 that leads to the interior of the motor casing 9. The exhaust port 20 from the rotary motor opens into a freely open to the drill chuck, dirt can readily enter the motor with the possibility of serious consequences to the latter. This will be evident when it is considered that these machines are ordinarily subjected to rough usage, which may include their lower ends being dropped into the mud or dirt when they are not running, and when the drill steels are not in place therein.
To obviate this possibility, in the present embodiment a screen is employed between the drill chuck and the gear casing 21. This screen, in the embodiment disclosed, is in the form of a ring or collar 22 that is interposed between the front end of the cylinder member 5 and the rear end of thechuck,
being provided with rearwardly extending lugs 23 that are engaged in sockets 24 formed in the former, whereby the ring is not only clamped, but is held against rotation. The portion of the ring ad acent to the gearing is flattened as shown at 25 to provide clearance for the gearing, and this flattened portion is provided with perforations 26 constituting a screen, which while permitting the free outflow of the exhaust fluid to the drill steel, will prevent the entrance of dirt into the gearing and the rotary motor.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, dperation and many advantages of the herein described invention without further description, and it will be I what I understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In apparatus of the character set forth, the combination with drilling apparatus, including motor mechanism, a' front head, a rotary chuck in the front head for removably receiving a tool, said head having a chamber in which the rear end of such tool is received and operated on, of gearing at said head for rotating the chuck, a casing enclosing the gearing and having means of communication with the chamber, a screen across said means of communication, and means for directing the exhaust from the motor mechanism into the gear casing and thence through the screen to the chamber.
2; The combination in a drilling apparatus, of a drilling motor having a cylinder member provided with an open chamber in its front end, a hammer piston in the cylinder member, a rotatable chuck in advance of the chamber having a bore to receive a drill steel and hold the same with its rear end in position to be operated on by the hammer piston, said chuck having its rear end terminating in advance of the piston, means for introducing a cleansing fluid into the open chamber, and a collar surrounding the chamber and interlocked with the cylinder member, said collar having screen portion across the introducing means.
3. The combination in a drilling apparatus, of a drilling motor having a cylinder member provided with an open chamber in its front end, a hammer piston in the cylinder member, a rotatable chuck in advance of the chamber having a here to receive a drill steel and hold the same with its rear end in position to be operated on by the hammer piston, said chuck having its rear end terminating in advance of the piston, a casing on one side of the chamber, a chuck rotating motor and gearing operated thereby and operating on the chuck, said motor and gearing being enclosed by the casing, said chamber having a port communicating with the interior of the casing for permitting the exhaust from the chuck rotating motor to enter the chamber, and a collar surrounding the chamber and having an interlocking engagement with the cylinder to prevent the rotation of the collar, said collar having a perforated portion across said port.
