As is customary in apparatus of this character, the front'head G serves as a housing for chuck mechanism J into which extends a working implement K to receive the blows of the hammer piston H. The rear end of the chuck mechanism J is ournalled within an extension L of a bushing O which extends into the cylinder B to form a closure for the front end of the piston chamber E.
In the periphery of the bushing O is'an annular recess'P which serves as a reservoir for oil whereby the cooperating movable and stationary surfaces of the various elements of 49 the rock drills are lubricated. The cylinder B may as shown serve as an outer bounding surface for the reservoir P and in the wall of the cylinder is an aperture Q, through which oil may be introduced into the reservoir P.
{The aperture Q, is normally sealed by a filler plug R- threaded thereinto.
Rearwardly of the piston chamber E and in the cylinder B is an enlarged bore S to vaccommodate valve and rotation mechanisms T and U, respectively. The valve mechanism 1932. Serial No. 608,224.
T, which'is disposed adjacent the rear end ofthe piston chamber E to form a closure therefor, comprises a pair of plates V and W, and in the plate W is a valve chamber X to accommodate a distributing Valve Y of the oscillatory plate type having wings Z and b for controlling front and rear inlet pass-. ages 0 and (Z, respectively. The rear inlet passage d is locate-d entirely within the plate V and opens directly into the rear end of the piston chamber E and the front inlet passage 0 extends through the plate V and through the cylinder B to the front end of the piston chamber E.
The rotation mechanism U, which is shown as being ofa well known type, comprises a ratchet ring 6 interposed between the plate W and theback head D. Within the ratchet ring 6 is a head f of a rifle bar 9 which extends through the valve mechanism T and is interlockingly engaged with the piston H in a well known manner. The head f of the rifle bar is shown provided with the usual pawls h. for engagement with the ratchet ring 6 to effect rotary movement of the working implement K through the piston H and the chuck mechanism J, to whichthe piston may be interlockingly connected.
The admission of pressure fluid into therock drill is controlled by a throttle valve j which may be in constant communication with a source of pressure fluid supply and controls a supply passage k'extending from v the throttle valve j to the valve chamber X.
The oil within the reservoir P is constantly subjected to pressure fluid which may be.- conveyed to the reservoir by a passage 0 in the cylinder 13 and which-passage opens into the'supply passage is, or to some other suit-' able source of supply to assure the presence of pressure fluid within the passage 0 during the operation Ofjthe rock drill; In the pe-- riphery of" the bushingO and at points on opposite sidesof the reservoir P are annular grooves p and g which communicate with the passage 0 throughpassages 1- in the'wall of the cylinder B. through passages '10. Near the rear end of the passage v is a passage .92 which leads through the cylinder B and the plate V to a bore 1 in the plate V and through which the rifle bar 9 extends.
In the operation of the device so far de-' scribed pressure fluid admitted into the passage 0 flows through the associated passages lnto the reservoir P. Such pressure fluld forces oil forwardly and rearwardly from the reservoir P through-the restricted spaces 6 into the groove a Inasmuch as the passage 0 is in communicationwith the rear end of the piston chamber E through the passage 00 and the bore y, pressure fluid flows into the passage '11 during each admission of pressure fluid into the rear end of the piston chamber.
The pressure fluid in the passage/v again returns to the piston chamber when the -piston head G uncovers the exhaust port F to communicate the rear end of the piston chamber withthe atmosphere. The oil entrained in the pressure fluid flowing from the passage i; will then be deposited upon the rifle bar 9 and such other elementsto which the pressure fluid previously stored in the passage '12 has access.
In accordance with the present invention it is contemplated to utilize a portion of the oil conveyed bythe pressure fluid passing through the passage 4) for lubricating the feeding means whereby the rock drill is actuated to and from the work, as for instance, that designated by z and comprising a feed nut 2 disposed within a bore 3 of a lug t on the cylinder B. The feed nut 2, which may be of a'well'known type, has a threaded aperture 5 that extends entirely through the feed nut. On one end ofthe feed nut is a head 6' that seats against an end surface 7 of the lug" 4. Preferably the passages 10 open into the interior of the feed nut at points about midway between its ends thereby preventing undue loss of pressurefluid and the violent expulsion of lubricant from the endsof the nut. In practice, upon each exhaust of'pressure fluid from the passage 2; a portion of such pressure fluid, together with the oil carried thereby, flows into. the feed nut 2 where the oil is deposited upon the cooperating surfaces of the feed nut and the feed screw 2. These surfaces'of the feed nut and the feed screw will therefore be well lubricated to pro tect them against wear and the connection between the feed screw and the feed nut may be made. initially tighter than heretofore;
