Specificationforming part of Letters Patent No. 168,013, dated September 21, 1875 application filed July 27; 1875.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRED O. HAMILTON, of the city, county, and State of New York,

have invented a new and Improved Device for enough to fold over or overlap a part of the face of the stamp, to prevent the figures or other marks thereon from obliteration. The protector can be lettered and marked as desired, and fastened to the package by nails or screws, or otherwise. A portion of the stamp maybe separated either by tearing it away with the protector or by cutting around the portion of the stamp which is not cemented to the package.

The stamp is to be so made and applied that the separation of a portion, as above described, Will prevent the reuse of the rest. The holder or protector also contains a duplicate stamp in shape of a coupon, embracing items of importance to the government, enabling the proper ot'ficer to determine the genuineness of the stamp bycomparison of the coupon therewith, or with the original coupon in the book of the collector.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a plan view of the holder open, with the holder-coupon applied thereto, and ready for the application of the seal. Fig. 2 is a plan of the holder closed, showing the exposed portion of the stamp in position on the head of the barrel. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3, Fig. 2.

A stamp suitable for use with this invention I have described in a separate application. My present invention is not necessarily limited in its use and application to such peculiar stamp.

In the accompanying drawings, the stamp or seal is shown at S, having attached coupons (3 of any customary or suitable form. 0 represents a second coupon, which may or may not be made in one piece with the original stamp, nd separated therefrom at the time of using. The coupon O is applied to the inner face of the hinged flap L of the sealholder, 'as illustrated in Fig. 1, representing the body of the holder. The body K and flap L may be made in one piece of sheet metal, the flap being constructed with suitable splines, projections, orlpoints l, which, in practice, are turned up to a position at right angles with the flap before the latter is folded over on the body K. The stamp S being introduced be tween the body K-and flap L, the points I are pressed through the stamp, and folded and applied against the back of the body K, so as to hold the whole securely together. The stamp with the holder attached is then cemented to the barrel, and is further secured by screws T, which may be barbed or otherwise constructed, so as to prevent their removal after insertion without destroying them. This, however, is not essential to the invention. It will now appear that on removing the stamp-holder the portion of the stamp inclosed therein will be torn away from the parts above and below it, which remain cemented to the barrel-head. The part thus separated contains an essential part of the stamp, which will prevent the reuse of other portions, and the other portions, which are exposed during transportation of the package, must contain sufficient items for the identification of the holder by proper officers.
