My invention relates to st-aybolts for steam boilers. In order to permit limited relative movement of the fire box wall and the outer boiler shell, the parts connected by staybolts to prevent substantial relative movement, it has been the practice to make use of staybolt structures providing for a very limited relative movement of the parts. Such devices have been open to the objection that relative movement longitudinally of the connected parts subjected the fire box wall, and the inner end of the bolt rigidly attached thereto, to injurious distorting strains. My invention has for its object the provision of a staybolt structure which will be free from the objections referred to and which will permit the necessary degree of relative movement of the connected parts. The invention comprises a double ball-joint structure and includesa sleeve member having a ball-joint engagement with the boiler shell, or a sleeve mounted thereon, and a balljoint engagement with'the outer end of the staybolt proper. The two ball-joint structures thus provided are located preferably contiguous to each other at or near the boiler shell and provide the required degree of relative movement of the parts. The hollow sleeve member permits'the application ao therethrough of an anvil member to the outer end of the staybolt while the inner end is being riveted to the fire box wall.

In the practice of my invention, referring descriptively to the specific embodiment thereof which is herein exemplified, the staybolt structure, includes a bolt 5 permanently attached at its inner end to a fire box wall 6, the inner end of the bolt 5 being threaded as at 7 for engagement with a threaded opening in the wall 6 and having its inner end upset or riveted as at 8, when the bolt has been placed in position in the fire box wall.

larged spherical portion 9 for cooperation with a socket 10 provided in the'lower end of a sleeve member 11 having its upper end spherically formed on its outer surface as at 12. It will be seen that with the construction described a double ball and socket joint:

The opening or passageway 17 through the sleeve member 11 is utilized in the mounting part or member may be inserted through the opening 17' to bear against the outer end of the bolt 5 to support the bolt during the application of a riveting operation to the lower end thereof. In addition, a slot 18 in" the upper end of the bolt -'5. provides for the rotation of the bolt through the use of a suitable tool for turning the bolt to position in the threaded opening in the fire box wall 6 in which the lower end of the bolt 9 is received; 1

:In the modification shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, a sleeve member 22 is shown which has a spherically formed upper end portion 23 adapted to engag directly with the edges of an opening 2e formed in the boiler shell to provide a spherical seat in which the rounded sleeve portion 23 may have universal movement. The sleeve member 22 is relatively shorter than the sleeve member 11 shown in Fig. 1 since it is formed for direct engagement and cooperation with the edges of the opening 24 formed in the boiler shell itself. Preferably the diameter of the opening 2a in the boiler shell is such that the lower portion of the sleeve 22 w1ll pass through the opening 24,v thereby facilitating the operation of mounting or demounting the parts, in position in the boiler structure. The restricted size of the opening 2 1, as compared with the size of the opening in which the sleeve 14 is received, tends to leave a stronger boiler shell structure since less of the material making up the wall is removed in forming the opening. It will also be seen that the..uti.lization of the small sized opening makes it possible to use lighter mate rial for the wall structure, as such a lighter walled structure with its smaller opening will have approximately the same strength as that of a thicker walled structure with larger openings.
A protecting sleeve member 25 is welded or otherwise attached to the exterior surface of the boiler shell 6 in enclosing relation to the opening 24: formed therein while a cap member 26 is applied to the sleeve member 25 to cover the enclosed .parts.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, is an embodiment of the invention in which another form of sleeve member 27 is used. In this form, the sleevemember is provided with a spherical portion 28, similar to that shown in Fig. 2, which cooperates directly with the edges of the opening 29 formed in the boiler shell 30. The sleeve 27, however, is provided with a relatively larger bore 31. This constuction is less expensive to produce than that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, in that the opening 31 may be formed by a single operation. In order to reinforce the bearing portion 28 of the sleeve 27, a plug member 32 is inserted in the upper end of the sleeve member 27 and has threaded engagement therewith as at 33. The construction is otherwise similar to that already described.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent: 1
1. In a boiler staybolt structure, a bolt adapted to be attached at its inner end to the fire box wall and having a spherical outer end, and a sleeve member having an exterior bearing surface at its outer end spherically formed to provide a ball and socket connection with the boiler shell, said sleeve member having a socket at its other socket portion of the connecting member being adapted to receive said spherical outer end of the bolt.
3. In a boiler staybolt structure, a bolt having threaded engagement at its inner end with the fire box wall and having a spherical outer end, a sleeve member having a socket formation at its lower end in which to receive the'outer spherical end of the bolt, said sleeve member having a ballshaped upper end, the boiler shell being provided with an openingformed to provide a seat for the spherical outer end of the sleeve, and the outer end of the bolt being provided with a slot to receive a tool passed through the hollow sleeve for turn ing the bolt to seat the: same in the fire box wall. g

In a boiler staybolt structure, a bolt having threaded engagement at its inner end with the fire box wall and having a spherical outer end, a sleeve member hav* ing a socketformation at its lower end in which to receive the-outer spherical end of the bolt, said sleeve member having a ball-shaped upper end, the boiler shellbeing'provided with an opening formed to provide a seat forthe spherical outer end of the sleeve, the outer end of the bolt being provided with a slot to receive a tool, said opening in the boiler shell having a re stricted diameter to permit the lower end of the sleeve to pass therethrough with a minimum of clearange, a. sleeve attached to the exterior surface of the boiler shell in enclosing relation to the opening, and a cap member adapted to close the outer end of thesleeve. 7'
5. In a boiler staybolt structure, a bolt attached at its inner end to the fire box wall and having a spherical outer end, a sleeve zmember havinga socket formation at its lower end in which to receive the outer spherical end of the bolt, said sleeve member having a ball-shaped upper end, the
boiler shell being provided with an opening formed to provide a seat for the spherical outer end of the sleeve, and a plug member for closing the outer end of the sleeve member.
6. In a boiler staybolt structure, a bolt attached at its inner end to the fire box wall and having a. spherical outer end, a sleeve member having a socket formation at its lower end in which to receive the outer spherical end of the bolt, said sleeve member having a ball-shaped upper end, the boiler shell being provided with an opening formed to provide a seat for the spherical outer end of the sleeve, a plug member having screw-threaded relation with the outer end of the sleeve, a sleeve member at- 10 tached to the exterior surface of the boiler shell in enclosing relation to the opening,
and a cap member for said sleeve member.
