To all w am it may con cern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR F. Prrxin, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Schenectady, in the county of Schenectady and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sheet Connections for Steam-Boiler Stay Bolts, of which improvement the following is a specification.
My invention relates to stay bolts for steam boilers of the class or type known as flexible, in which the stay bolt is articulated, at one or both of its ends, to a sheet or sheets of a steam boiler for the purpose of imparting flexibility to the boiler sheets and connecting stay bolt for exempting them from bending strains under variations of temperature.
The object of my invention is to provide, in a stay bolt structure which is articulated to one or both of two boiler sheets that are relatively inclined, means for articulating thestay bolt proper to one or both of said boiler sheets, which shall be of simple and inexpensive construction andapplication; of the lightest weight, compatible with proper strength; and of minimum projection from the exterior of the boiler shell.
The improvement claimed is hereinafter fully set forth:
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a view of a portion of one of the outside sheets of a steam boiler, illustrating an ap plication of my invention; and, Fig. 2, a longitudinal section through the same, on the line II-II of Fig. 1.
In the practice of my invention, referring descriptively to the specific embodiment thereof which is herein exemplified, in which the stay bolt is articulated to the boiler at one of its ends only, I provide a plug, 2, which, in its original condition, is of frusto-conical form, with parallel ends, and of tubular section, as shown at the left in the drawing, its shell being made sufiiciently thick to safely resist the strain to which it will be subjected in service. A short neck, 2*, is formed centrally on the inner end of the plug, 2, and a ball, 2 which is in the form of a truncated sphere, is forged or machined on the end of the neck, which is further from the plug. The plug is fitted in an opening. of corresponding form, in an outer sheet, A, of the boiler, and is secured therein in any suitable known manner, as by being welded thereto, with 1922. The ball, 2, is articulated to the adjoining end of'the stay bolt, 1, by fitting in a socket, 1*, thereon, said socket being turned over on the ball, to provide a bearing therefor. The stay bolt may be either articulated to the inner sheet of the boiler, in a similar manner, or be connected thereto by screw threads and a riveted over end, as in ordinary practice.
In installing the stay bolt structure, the ball and stay bolt having been first articulated as above specified, the plug, 2, is secured in the outer boiler sheet, A, as by being welded thereto or screwed thereinto. The shell of the plug is then cut off by a gas torch or other suitable cutting instrument, so as to be made parallel, around its top, with the outer boiler sheet, A, projecting therefrom only so far as the surrounding welding material, 7, extends above the sheet, if the plug should be secured thereto by welding, irrespective of the angularity of the outer sheet to the axial line of the plug.
Among the advantages of my invention, which will be recognized by those familiar with locomotive boiler construction, there may be noted the ability to reduce the projection of the end connecting member from the outer boiler sheet to the lowest practicable degree; the resultant easy application of the lagging jacket, and brackets; mate rial reduction in weight; and protection of the outer opening of the tell tale hole.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a steam boiler stay bolt structure, the combination, with a steam boiler sheet, of an end connection member, for articulation to a stay bolt, said member having a tubular body, the top of which is parallel with the boiler sheet, in which it is adapted jecting from its inner end, for articulation to a stay bolt.
3. In a steam boiler stay bolt structure, the combination, with a steam boiler sheet,
of an end connection member, having a tubular body, the top of which is parallel with the boiler sheet, in which it is adapted to be secured, and which is inclined relatively to its axial line, a neck and ball projecting from its inner end, for articulation to a stay bolt, and having a tell tale hole, extending through its bottom and neck.
4. The improvement in the manufacture of a stay bolt structure, which consists in articulating an end connection member of truncated cone form, to a stay bolt; securing said connection member in an outer boiler sheet which is inclined relatively to the axial line of the connection member; and thereafter cutting off the shell of said member to parallelism with the boiler sheet.
