Description

J. B; IDHVNSUN. Roller for Buffing Soles.
No. 167,904. Patenredsepnzmn.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. e
JOSEPH B. JOHNSON, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS. n
IMPROVEMENT IN RoLLER'sl Fon Bul-'FING soLEs.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 167,904, dated September 21, 1875 application led August 10, 1875.
'OASE A.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. JOHNSON, of Lynn, of the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have made a new and useful invention having reference to Rollers for Bufng Soles; and do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1 is a top view; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a transverse section, of a bnfling-roller provided with my invention. the object of which is to e'ect the securing of the said emery-paper covering upon the cushioned body of the roller, it having been customary heretofore to accomplish such by nails or tacksdriven into the abrasive covering and the roller-body.
My said invention consists in the combination of a series of hitching-points and springs and screws with the roller.
In the drawings, A denotes the rollerbody, covered with a cushion, B, offelt. Within the said body there is arranged, as shown, a series of movable hitching points or spurs, O C C, each having its shank so applied to the roller-body, or to such and its shaft T, as to be capable of sliding radially or transversely therein. Furthermore, the shank b of each of such points or spurs is furnished with a spring, D, connected to the roller, and so applied to the shank as to push or move it longitudinally, so as to force the point out beyond the periphery of the roller. There is to each point a tubular screw, G, which receives in its bore the said point, and screws into the body of the roller or into a metallic arm, H, projecting radially from the roller-shaft. The
screw is provided with a nicked head, as shown, to receive al screw-driver. On removing the screws G from the roller-body the hitching-points will be projected beyond the peripheral surface of said body and its cushion, ready for reception of the sheet I of said paper or emery cloth, which, near one edge of it, is to be pressed upon the points, so as to force them through it, after which the sheet is to be drawn closely around the roller, lapped a short distance upon itself, and again -appliedto the points in manner as before described.
This having been done, the screws G are to he.
placed upon the points and screwed into the roller body or arms H, and against the outer ends of the shanks of the points, so as to crowd the saidshanks and points back within the body, and the heads of the said screws down upon the abrasive covering, which, by the screws, will thus be held in place on the cushion-covering of the roller, with the screwheads sunk within such covering.
The advantages of my invention will be readily seen by persons who use bufing-machines, as it enables the buiing-rollers to be
