UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH P. DION, OF BIDDEFOBD, MAINE.
HEEL-BURNISH ER AND EDGE-SETTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 290,544,dated December 18, 1883.
Application filed September 4, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH P. DION, of Biddeford, county of York, Maine, have invented a new and Improved He'el-Burnisher and Edge- Setter, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to improve burnishing-tools and edge-setters, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is partly a plan View and partly a horizontal section of my improved burnisher and edge-setter. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation, and Fig. 3 is a face view, of the burnisher.
I arrange a mandrel, a, of suitable size and length in bearings b c of a suitable frame, and apply a chuck, (Z, to one end, carrying an edgesetter, c, said edgesetter being secured in said chuck by a set-screw, f, enabling the edge-setter to be shifted out or in, according to the length the head of the edgesetter is required to project from the end of the mandrel, which varies with the thickness of-the edge of the sole to be finished by the edge-setter. The chuck is secured to the mandrel by the setscrew 9, to allow it to be taken off when required. To the other end of the mandrel I apply a disk, h, having groove 2' in the side eccentric to the axis of the shaft, for a means of imparting a rising-andfalling motion to the staff of the burnishing-tool j, said staffconsist.
ing of the bar is, pivoted to the machine-frame at Z, and the bar m, confined to and sliding along bar It in clips n, the bar is having astudpin, 0, working in the eccentric groove '13 of the disk n. Between the clips n of bar It a coiled spring, 12, is arranged around bar m, the front end of the spring being connected to I bar m, and the back end resting against the clip n.
The burnisher consists of the convex and obliquely-ribbed face q of the head of the bar m, with a flange, 3, attached to one side for a gage to the bottom of the heel to control the action of the face q.
- I may employ a crank-pin in the side of the disk It, with suitable connection to the bar It, instead of having the pin on the bar and the groove in the disk.
It will be seen that by the contrivance of the staff in two parts, so that the burnisher may have back motion against the spring when the shoe is pressed against it, and is passed up to the work by the yielding force of the spring, the action of the burnisher will be very smooth and easy on the leather, and the effect much better than that of the more positive, and consequently more harsh, contrivances.
A stand may be employed in front of the burnisher to rest the shoe on while holding it on the burnisher, if desired.
The mandrel is provided with a suitable driving-pulley, t, and the burnisher-staif is inclosed in a chamber, a, of the frame to'conceal it and protect it.
The burnisher is attached to the end of bar m, and secured by a set-screw, c.
Having thus described my inventi0n,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The rotary mandrel a, carrying the edge setter e at one end and the eccentricallygrooved disk 12 i at the other, in combination with the, burnisherstaff having a stud-pin, 0, whereby said mandrel may operate the edgesetter and burnisher simultaneously.
2. A burnishenstaff consisting of a pivoted bar, It, having the clips n n, and having a studpin, 0, adapted to work in the camslot of a rotary disk, the slide-bar m, carrying a burnisher at the lower end, and the spiral'spring 10, all constructed and arranged substantially as shown and described.
