PRINTING-PRESS GAUGE.

This invention relates to gauges as used in combination with tympan or top sheets on printing press platens to guide the blanks to be printed and cause them to register correctly with the type.
It is one of the objects of this invention to provide a particularly eff ctive device capable of being speedily and positively clamped to the tympan sheet when in adjusted position.
A further feature is in the provision of means whereby a single guide finger may be held firmly at eitherl side of the gauge or two guides used at the same time.
Another purpose is to produce a gauge having a slittingbladeby which an incision in the tympan sheet may be made without the use of accessories or auxiliary implements.
A further object is to provide a cam clamping device readily operated and which is rigid and secure in its operation.
rhese and other advantages such as simplicity, compactness and neatness of appear-v ance, are accomplished by the novel and practical const-ruction' and combination of parts hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming an essential part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention illustrating its application.
Figure 2 is an enlarged longitudinal sectional view of the device as in an applied or operative position.
Figure 3 is a similar sectional view but showing the upper element in a raised position.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view of the gauge showing the cam locking means.
Referring in greater detail to the drawings, the numeral 1() designates a portion of the platen of a conventional printing press on which is disposed a tympan sheet 11, having a slit 12.
lThe gauge consists of two main parts, respectively upper and lower, the latter being an oblong rectangular metal plate 14 beveled at its front end to produce a sharp blade 15 having rounded cutting corners 16 by which the slit 12 may be easily made.
Adjacent the knife blade edge are a plurality of sharp upstanding prongs 17 and substantially at the center of the plate is a circular concave recess 18 formed by indenting the material from the under side and a longitudinal slot 19 extends through the recessed metal.
The wall of the recess, at the sides of the slot 19, are shaped to produce opposed wedge shaped cam surfaces 20 for a purpose further on described.
At the opposite rear end of the plate the metal is sheared and curled upward to p rovide spaced hinge elements 21 through which is passed a. pin 22, the same connecting a reversely curled hinge element`23 extending from the rear element of an open rectangu-v lar box-like metal frame having a cover plate 24 and marginal, down-reaching flanges 25 of uniform length on all four sides.
The rear flange, Vas noted, is extended to form the hinge member 23 and the opposite, front'tlange is adapted to make contact with the base plate 14, closely adjacent the rear of the prongs 17.
At the center of the frame plate'24 the metal is pierced and down-turned to form a tubular bearing 26 receptive of a revoluble and slidable stem'27 provided at its outer end withl a lixedfbutton head 28, having a sharply corrugated outer face on which is a distinct line 29.
Fixed on the inner end of the 4stem is a cross bar 30 adapted 'to' bepress'ed through the tympan sheet 11, pass through the base plate slot 19 and be turned at an angle to engage the cam faces 20, the upper ends of the bar being shaped to produce corresponding cam faces 31.
Formed through the front and rear end flanges 24 of the frame, adjacent the side flanges and directly below the plate 24, are elongated rectangular openings 32 adapted to receive guide strip ngers 33, which may be curved upwardly at their forward projecting ends 34, and bent to frictionally engage the underside of the plate 24, the material of these strips being amenable to such distortion so as to be retained in any desired adjustment.
It is to be noted that two of these strips may be used at the same time or a single strip in either the right or left hand openings as may be preferred.
In operation, an incision is made in the tympan sheet by the blade 15, the lower plate 14 inserted therethrough and thereafter the upper element turned down upon the hinge.
By noting the position of the line 29 the bar 30 is brought into registration with the slot 19, whereupon the bar is forced through the tympan sheet by pressure applied to the button head 28, which is thereafter turned, locking the gauge ixedly to the tympan sheet.
Due to the slot ll made through the tympan sheet the gauge may be adjusted endwise and obviously the fingers may be moved to suit requirements.
From the foregoing it ivillbe seen that a simple device for this purpose has been disclosed in the preferred form of its embodic ment, but it is not desired to restrict the details to the exact instruction shown, it being obvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made without coniiicting with the scope of the appended claims. y i
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A gauge for use in combination with a tympan sheet comprising a base plate to pass through a slit'in said sheet, said plate having an apertured recess, a frame hinged to said plate to rest over said sheet, means in said frame to adjustably carry one or more guide strips, a manually operable head rotatably mounted in said frame, and cam means actuated by said head to engage in the base recess and clamp saidl frame to the base.
