It will thus be seen ,that .upon a collapse lll) of the bellows, air will be forced through the reed chamber 14, through the reed 13, into the orifice chamber 11. The reed is so designed that upon expansion of air from the interior of the bellows the reed will be'caused` to vibrate and give olf a. high pitched cry.
Mounted on the upper surface of theorilice chamber 11, on a suitable pivot 15, is a spring-held valve, this valve having a fiap 16, which is provided with a rsoft face- 17 formed of leather, or other material of that character, the flap being sok adjusted that it will normally press the face 17 so as to cover the orifice 12.
Encircling the pivot is a spring 1S which normally holds the valve open so that the orifice is unrestricted. At the rear end of the valve there is provided a bentarm 19, this arm being provided with the U-shaped portion 20, across the legs of which is disposed a thin flexible membrane 21, this membrane being so positioned thattne edge will be engaged by theiingers 9 and 1U. y
The operation of the device is as follows: The voice mechanism will be placed in the body of the doll in such a position that when the doll is moved, for instance to the reclining` position, a. cry will be emitted. To attain this result the voice is disposed so that upon such movement of the doll, the weighted disc 7 will be caused to move under the influence of gravity to collapse the bellows. This movement will cause the air to be expelled from the bellows, thereby producing a. vibration of the reed and the incidental cry.
As the disc moves, however, it will move the sleeve 8 with it, and the linger 9 will strike against the edge of the membrane 21, forcing the valve 16 to close the orifice 12. This closure will shut off the air movement, and consequently cause the reed to be still, The disc, however, continues a steady movement, and in a short interval of time the finger 9 will slip off the edge of the membrane 21, which will stretch enough to permit such movement.
'Ilie valve being then free, will be caused to return to the open position of the spring 18, where-upon a reed will again commence to vibrate. This is followed in a short instance of time by the second closing of the orifice by the linger 10. As the linger 10 in turn slips beyond the edge ofthe membrane the oriiice will be opened and the reed again caused to vibrate.
It will thus be seen that there willr be produced a plurality of syllables caused by the action of the fingers and the valve. This action is such as to produce a series of syllables, such as Ma-ma-ma. Obviously, the number of lingers onv the actuating sleevev may be increased or decreased, as desired, and it will also be possible to vary the 'spacing therebetween, thus causing the produc- Leve,

Infthe device as modified in Figure 4E, the parts are somewhat reversed. In this position the bellows 5 is anchored to the head 2, and the weighted disc 7 takes the place of the head 3. The sleeve S with theactuating fingers 9-and 10 thereon, is now fast in position on the rod 4L. The orifice chamber, the
reed chamber, and the valve are in all respects similar to ythat previously shown in Figure 2, but these members are now mounted on the disc 7. rIhe action of the device is in all respects similar to that previously illustrated, except that the sleeve 8, as has been explained, isnow fast inr position, and the disc 7 with the orificechamber and the valve, move past the lingers as lthe bellows is collapsed.

In the type of device illustrated in Figures 5 and 6, the construction .is similar to that shown in Figure 2,y except the lowerl end of the casing is provided with a second chamber 22, having a perforated heady 23 therein.y

Itvwill be seen that I have provided a device well adapted to attain the aims and ob-` jects previously set forth. The sound producing mechanism proper is under complete control, and maybe provided with actuating members so that any combination of sylla bles desired may be sounded. Obviously in use for a doll it Will be desirable to have -a reed with a high pitch note to simulate Wise put out of order.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A device of the class described, comprising in combination, a bellows having a weighted disc as one wall thereof, a post rigidly mounted relative to saidk bellows, a sound producing device in communication with the interior of said bellows, meansto control the sound so produced, said means including an orifice chamber and a valve for the orifice therein, said valve being pivotally mount-ed and provided with a resilient actuating surface, a sleeve mounted on said post and provided with an actuating linger adapted to engage said surface, said linger and said surface being relatively movable upon the collapse of said bellows.

A device of the class described, comprising in combination a collapsible'chamber, a sound producing device in communication with the interior therewith, and including an orifice chamber and a pivotally mounted spring-held valve movable to close said oritice, the said valve having an arm provided with a membrane having one edge exposed, a post rigidly mounted relative to said chamber, a sleeve mounted on said post and provided with a linger adapted to engage said edge of the membrane, said finger and said membrane being relatively movable as said chamber collapses, and a sound producing device operable by the expansion of said chamber. y

A device of the class described1 comprising in combination, a casing having a chamber formed by a pair of headsintermediate the ends thereof, a bellows mounted on one of said heads, the sound producing devices on said head in communication with the interior of said bellows, said device including an orifice chamber and a valve to control the openingI of said orifice, saidvalve having a resilient actuating surface, a finger duced, 'said last named means including 'a sound emission orifice, a movable valve member controlling' emission of sound from said oriliceand carrying a yieldable membrane, and means coacting with saidmembrane and movable against the resistance thereof 'to actuate said valve and control the emission of sound through said orifice.

A device of the class described comprising incombination, an air chamber hav-- ing a fixed head'and a gravity operable head movable towards and from said iixed head, a sounding reed operated by the passage -of air therethrough in the movement of said latter head in one direction, a chamberreceiving sound fromfsaid reed and having an emission orifice, and means to control the sound produced including a pivoted valve, and a movl able valve actuating member, one 4of said parts carrying a yieldable membrane, and the other of said partshaving spaced members successively coacting with said meinb'rane in the movement of said movable meinber to intermittently actuate said valve and controltlie escape of rsound from said emission orifice.

Iny a device. of the class described, sound producing means including a reed and an air chamber having a movable wall to cause a flow of air through said reed, and means for controlling the emission of sound from said reed comprisink0- an arm pivoted intermediate of itsends` avalve element on said arm at one side of its pivot, a yicldable elementr on said arm at the other side of its pivot and having a part substantially parallel with' the -movable chamber wall, and spaced means carried by said movable chamber wall successively coacting with said part of the yieldablemember and movable against the resistance thereof to repeatedly actuate said valve element. y
