A cylindrical sheet metal cap 16 is carried by the head 12, said head having a rabbet or seat 17 formed in its periphery with which the marginal edge of the annular wall of said cap is frictionally engaged. The body wall of the cap 16 is disposed in spaced parallel relation to the face of the bellows head 12 and thus provides a chamber 18 receiving the sound waves produced by the reed 15. The annular "all of the cap 16 is provided at circulnferentially spaced points with the slots 19. It will be noted that the diameter of the head 12 and cap 16 is somewhat less than the internal diameter of the casing 5.
The wall of the casing 5 at longitudinally spaced points, is formed with outwardly pressed annular sections 20 of relatively diffelent widths, thus providing spaced en largements of the internal diameter of said casing and forming annular sound emission pockets therein.
In the operation of the device as above described, when the bellows is distended or in flated and the head 12 thereof is in the position as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing, said head moves downwardly by gravity from such position, thereby collapsing the flexible bellows wall 8. In such gravity movement of the head 12, the air within the bellows is expelled therefrom through the reed 15, thereby producing a sound which is received in the chamber 18 carried by the bellows head. In the initial portion of the movement to said head, the sound escapes from chamber 18 in relatively small volume through the slots 19 between the wall of the cap 16 and the wall of the casing 5, such sound finally emitted through the openings 7 sin'iulating the spoken pronunciation of the letter M, as the head 12 continues its movement, when the slots 19 come into registration with the annular pocket in the casing wall formed by the first outwardly pressed section 20 thereof, the area of the emission passage between the wall of the cap 16 and the casing wall is increased and sound escapes therethrough in greater volume from chamber 18 and simulates the pronunciation of the letter A, thus completing the sounding of the first syllable ma. hen the slots 19 pass below the first annular pocket in the casing wall, the emission of the sound is again checked by the narrowing of the sound passage and the sounding of the letter M is again simulated and when said slots register with the second relatively wide pocket in the casing wall, there is a final sounding of the letter A for a relatively long period of time, thereby prolongingthe sounding of the second word syllable ma. In this manner, the desired articulation of the infant cry ma-ma is realistically simulated. Then the device is inverted from the position in Fig. 2, the gravity movable head 12 moves in the opposite direction in the casing 5 so that the bellows is inflated as the air enters the same through slots 19 and the reed 15.
From the foregoing description considered in connection with the accompanying draw ings, the construction and manner of operation of my present improvements will be clearly understood. It will be seen that I have greatly simplified devices of this character by eliminating the use of relatively movable valve parts on the casing or the movable bellows head and the necessary actuating means therefor. The device is thereby also rendered exceedingly durable, and positive and reliable in its functional operation. It is also apparent that such a device is susceptible of quantity production at appreciably less cost than devices of the prior art, such as I have referred to.
lVhile I have herein shown and described one simple, practical. and satisfactory embodiment of my present improvements, it will nevertheless, be understood that the essential features of the present disclosure might also be embodied in other alternative structures. Accordingly, I reserve the privilege o'l resorting to all such legitimate changes in the form, construction and relative arrangement of the several parts as herein described, and as may be fairly considered as in the'spirit and scope oi. the invention as claimed.
I claim:
1. In a sound producing device, a casing having sound emission apertures in the wall thereof, a bellows arranged within said casing having a gravity movable head, a sound producing reed through which air is expelled from the bellows in the movement of said headin one direction, the wall of said casing being also provided with sound emission passages spaced apart longitudinally of the casing,and relatively fixed means on the bellows heads cooperating with said spaced passages in the air expelling movement of said head to effect an articulated emission of the sound.
2. In asound producing device, a casing having sound emission apertures in the wall thereof, a bellows arranged within said casing having a gravity movable head, a sound producing reed through which air is expelled from the bellows in the movement of said head in one direction, the wall of said casing being also provided with sound emission passages spaced apart longitudinally of the casing, said head having a chamberthereon receiving sound from said reed,

and the chamber wall being provided with a sound outlet opening to cooperate with said sound passages of the casing wall in the air expelling movement of said head to efiiect an articulated emission of the sound.
3. In a sound producing device, a cylindrical casing having sound emission apertures in one wall thereof, a bellows arranged within said casing having a gravity movable head, a sound producing reed through which air is expelled from the bellows in the movement of said head in one direction, the cylindrical wall of said casing being provided with longitudinally spaced annular sound emission passages therein, and relatively fixed means on the movable bellows head cooperating with said passages in the air expelling movement of said head to effect an articulated emission of the sound.
4. In a sound producing device, a cylindrical casing having sound emission apertures in one wall thereof, a bellows arranged within said casing having a gravity movable head, a sound producing reed through which air is expelled from the bellows in the movement of said head in one direction, the cylindrical wall of said casing being provided with longitudinally spaced annular sound emission passages therein, said bellows head being provided with a chamber receiving the sounds from said reed, and one wall of said chamber having a plurality of spaced sound outlet openings therein cooperating with said annular passages of the casing wall in the air expelling movement of the bellows head to effect an articulated emission of the sound. 5. In a sound producing device, a cylindrical casing having an end wall provided with sound emission apertures therein, a bellows arranged within the casing having a gravity movable head, a sound producing reed through which air is expelled from the bellows in the movement of said head in one direction, the cylindrical wall of said casing having longitudinally spaced outwardly pressed annular sections forming spaced annular sound emission passages therein, a cylindrical cap fixed upon the bellows head and providing a chamber receiving the sound from said reed, the wall of said cap being provided with .a series of circumferentially spaced openings therein cooperating with said annular passages of the casing wall in the air expelling movement of said head to effect an articulated emission of the sound.
6. In a sound producing device, an air chamber, a gravity movable member for causing a flow of air into and out of said chamber, a sounding reed through which the air flows in the movement of said member in one direction, and means for interrupting the emission of the sound produced by said reed including longitudinally spaced parts surrounding the air chamber and permitting of the emission of the sound in definite volume, and cooperatively related means carried by said gravity movable member and controlling such emission of the sound.
7 In a sound producing device, a casing open at one of its ends for the emission of sound therethrough, anair receiving chamber within the casing and a gravity movable member for expelling air from said chamber, .a sound producing reed through which the air is expelled, said casing having a wall provided with spaced circumferentially continuous passages therein, and relatively fixed means carried by the air expelling member and cooperating with said casing wall to control the emission of sound through said passages and effecting articulated emission of the sound.
