J. FAUST STEAM PRESSING IRON Filed Sept 24, 1926 Ja'cofi Haas! INVENTOR ATTORNEY Patented July 17, 1928.
UNITED STATES JACOB IAUST, OF PASSAIC, NEW JERSEY.
STEAM PRESSING IRON.
Application filed September 24, 1926. Serial no. 137,546.
This invention relates to improvements in sadirons and has particular reference to a steam pressing iron for tailors and the like.
The primary object of the invention resides inthe provision of a means for utilizing the heat from a heating element contained within the body of the iron and used for heating the same for generating steam which is led from a steam chamber to the ironing face of the iron adjacent the toe thereof, whereby the goods to be pressed are moistened during the pressing operation, thus eliminating the moistening of the goods usually required before ironing.
Another object of the invention is to provide a steam pressing iron which includes a means for preheating water leading to a boiler actuated upon by the heat of the heating element contained in the iron whereby water entering the boiler is turned into steam for. escape through ducts which lead to the face of the iron.
With these and other objects in view, the invention resides in certain novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts, the essential features of whichare hereinafter fully described, are particularly pointed out in -the-appended claims, and are illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view through my improved pressing iron.
Figure 2-is a vertical transverse sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the reference numeral 10 designates my improved pressing iron in its entirety which includes a hollow body 11 having aflat base or pressing surface 12, and which body houses a heating element in the nature of a gasburner 13, which in the present form of iron serves to heat the base 12 for ironing purposes. A flexible tube or hose 14: leads from the burner 13 to a source of gas supply. The body 11 has a handle 15 secured thereto by which the iron is held by the operator during its movements over the goods to be pressed.
The toe end of the base 12 has a boss 16 rising from the inner face thereof, the exterior of the boss bein screw threaded for connection with the t readed end of a cylinder 17 which constitutes a steam generating chamber, which is positioned forward and adjacent the burner 13 to be beat-- ed by the flame therefrom. The upper end of the cylinder extends above the top of the body of the iron and is internally screw threaded for threading engagement with a closure cap or plug 18 which may be removed for access to the steam generating chamber when desired to clean the inside of said chamber. A pipe 19 enters the cylinderand depends to a point adjacent ,the bottom thereof and which pipe leads from a pipe coil 20 disposed beneath the burner 13. The outlet end of the pipe 19 is normally sealed by the water within the steam generating chamber to prevent steam from backing up therein when the flow of water to the chamber is shut off. A water supply hose 21 has one of its ends connected with the pipe coil 20 and which hose is provded with a suitable control valve 22 for regulating the flow of water through the pipe coil 20 to the cylinder.
The boss 16 is rovided with steam outlet ducts 23 whic open into the cylinder at one end and onto the ironing face of the base 12 whereby communication is established between the interior of the cylinder and the face of the iron. The interior of the cylinder may be termed a chamber and will be referred to as such hereinafter. The steam ducts 23 enter the chamber adjacent the top thereof by providing tubes 24 which rise from the boss.
In practice, the burner is lighted in the usual manner and permitted to heat up the iron after which the valve 22 is turned on to permit a limited amount of-water to flow into the pipe coil 20 where it is preheated before entering the chamber where it is accumulated. The water being preheated before entering the chamber, the same will immediately turn into steam due to the action of the intense heat fromthe flame, which flame heats the walls of the chamber. As the steam pressure in the chamber increases, the steam will find its way out of the ducts 23 and will penetrate the goods being pressed whereby to moisten the same prior to the passage of the major portion of the iron thereon.
While I have described what I deem to be the most desirable embodiment of my invention, it is obvious that many of the details of construction may be varied wi hout in any way departing from the spirit of my invention, and I therefore do not limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set forth nor to anything less than the whole of m invention limited only by the appended aims.
What is claimed as new is a 1. A pressing iron comprising a hollow body having a heating element arra ed therein, a 'cylinlrical steam generating chamber arranged in juxtaposition tosaid heating element, the walls of said steam enerating chamber being subjected to the mat from said heating element," steam outlet ducts leading from the pressing face of the iron to the interior of said steam generating chamber and opening into the same adjacent the top thereof, a water pipe extending downward into saidsteam generating chamber and terminating short of the bottom thereof, a pipe coil connected with said water pipe and disposed adjacent said heating element, a hose leading from said pipe coil to a suitable water supply, a d means for controllin the flow of water'from said water pipe, su bstantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A pressing iron com rising a hollow body having a heating e ement arranged therein, a cylindrical steam generatin chamber arranged in juxtaposition to saifi heating element, the walls of said chamber being subjected to the heat of said heating element, steam outlet ducts leading from the pressing face of the iron to the interior of said steam generating chamber, a water pipe extending into said steam generating chamber, and a pipe coil connected with said water pipe and disposed adjacent said heating element substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
* JACOB FAUST.
