2 Claims. ,(Cl. 38-16) This invention relates to a machine for use in steaming and/or pressing fabric and foro'ther uses, and an object of the invention is to provide a machine for the purpose of having permanently installed therein, heating and steam generating devices adapted for ready connection to the water supply and heating sources commonly installed in buildings, whereby a separate steam generator is made unnecessary andeconomy in operation and space is secured.
A further object is to embody in the buck or steamtable of such a machine, means for instantly converting small quantities or a spray of water into steam within a chamber of the buck, heating means being installed immediately beneath said chamber to apply high heat directlyto the bottom Wall of said chamberV and flash into steam, water sprayed upon said wall within said chamber, this steambeing directly applied to' the pad on the buck by escaping through perforations in the top Wall of v said chamber, this steam generating chamber thus becoming part of the buck and taking up no useful space in connection with the machine. It is also an object to provide certain other new and useful features in the construction, arrangement and combination of parts, all as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to the accompanying drawing wherein V Figure 1 is a front elevation of a machine illustrative of an embodiment of thepresent invention and showing the buck of the machine in longitudinal section; i

As shown, the machine comprises a suitable pedestal I provided with a forwardly projecting bracket 2 for the support of a shelf 3,and to the upper end of this pedestal, is pivotally attached an arm'4 carrying at its free end, a presser head 5 adapted to be swung down upon a buck indicated as aI Whole by the numeral 6, this construction and arrangement being old and well known and forming no part of the present invention which relates particularly to the construction and arrangement of the buck or an equivalent steam table.
As shown, the buck 6 comprises a hollow pedestal 1 formed with an arm 8 extending laterally from its upper end with said pedestal 1 secured in any suitable manner to the table 3 of the machineadjacent one end thereof with said arm 8 extending longitudinally of said table in spaced relation thereto and longitudinally of said presser head 5 when employed as the buck of al pressing machine. 'I'his arm 8 is formed with a 6 recess or chamber 9 opening through the upper side of said arm and extending substantially throughout its entire length, this arm forming a support for a casing I0 having an outline substantially the same as that of the head 5 when 10 embodied in a pressing machine or it mayhave any other desired shape and area when used as a steam table. This casing I0 has a bottom wall II formed with an upstanding peripheral flange to the edge of which a top plate I2 is secured to 15 close the upper side of the steam chamber I3 formed by said casing. This top plate or cover I2 is perforated or formed with small holes I4 throughout its entire area and secured in any suitable manner over this plate and holes therein 20 and over the sides and ends of said casing, is the usual fabric pad I5.
Extending upwardly Within the hollow pedestal t 1 and into the steam chamber I3, is a water supply pipe !6 which may be connected in any suit- 25 able manner to the city supply and in which pipe is a shut-off valve I1 controlled in any suitable manner, as by a foot pedal I8 connected to the valve to operate the same, by a rod I9. Within the steam chamber I3 upon the end of pipe I6 is 30 ra header 20 from which perforated pipes 2l extend substantially the entire length of the chamber and closed at their free ends, the perforations in these pipes being very small to discharge water in fine jets downwardly upon the bottom wall II 35 of the steam chamber. A valved drain pipe 22 extends through said wall to drain off any water which may accumulate in said chamber when the device is not in use and the valve I1 not completely closed. 40
The chamber 9 in the arm 8 directly below the bottom wall II of the steam chamber I3, is lined with a suitable insulation 23 and within said heating chamber 9 is a plurality of electrical resistance or heating elements 24 spaced apart and 45 extending substantially the full length of said heating chamber close to but spaced from the .bottom wall II of the steam chamber, leading-in wires 25 being connected to said resistance elements and extended intov the hollow pedestal l 50 where they are connected to a plug 26 in the wall' of the pedestal for connection with an electrical supply conduit.
When the heating elements 24 are plugged into the supply circuit, they very rapidly become 55 I other article thereon to be steam treated.
Other meansrthan electrical heating' elements may be employed to heat the Wall Il but in any event a supply of steam is immediately available and this supply is generated Within the buck or steam table itself, taking up no Valuable space and in no way hindering the use thereof in the usual mar'lenthe manner of supporting the buck and the arrangement in no Way hindering the placing of garments over the end thereof, and the necessity for a separate steam generating boiler is dispensed with. l
Obviously changes may be made in the construction Without departing from thespirit of the invention and I do not therefore Wish to limit myself to the particular construction and arrangement of elements shown.
What I claim is: l
1. A steaming device including a casing forming a chamber having a perforate top Wall and an imperforate substantially flat bottom Wall, means Within said chamber in spaced relation to and above said bottom wall for introducing water into said chamber in spray form to contact said bottom wall, means for controlling the introduction of Water into said chamber, means for heating to a high degree the bottom wall of said chamber by heat applied directly thereto exteriorly of said chamber to convert the water immediately into steam to create a steam pressure Within said chamber.
2. A steaming device including a member having a chamber closed by a top perforate Wall of extended area and a substantially flat bottom imperforate wall of like area, means for applying heat directly -to said bottom Wall exteriorly of said chamber, and means Within said chamber for spraying Water upon said interior surface of said bottom wall tobe flashed into steam and create a steam pressure within said chamber.
